Solar Heat Build-up and Venting?

Yes, just like in the mountains there will a lower ambient air temperature up on top, but the amount of solar energy hitting the top of the building, especially in the heat of the desert summer, could be extreme.

I've been thinking a lot about a discussion on the board a few pages back about the sawtooth edges of the decking on the upper steel floors and how once the cladding is installed there may be a series of open spaces against the perimeter of those levels. I speculated that perhaps that was to permit air flow between the levels up there since it seemed like there were too many of them for routine things like electrical, plumbing, or wiring chases. Fury wasn't sure either.

From what I have gathered, there will be no HVAC on the levels above the highest occupied or mechanical floors. So then if you think about it despite the reflective properties of the cladding glass there will be a lot of solar energy absorbed behind the curtain wall up there. And if they don't cover the beams and the sun hits that steel they will also absorb a lot of solar energy. And if that hot air moves up between levels through those spaces along the perimeter, where is all of that rising hot air going to go?

Since the top of the building gets narrower and narrower as tiers drop away that air could start to rise faster almost with a venturi type of effect, and if it flows into the pipe of the spire that could feel like blast furnace to the guys that have to climb up there to service the warning lights. The whole top of the building could be a giant solar collection tower like those both modern and ancient.

Can we assume that they have a venting system worked out up there with multiple places to let that rising hot air out?

Here in Phoenix, Arizona we have to deal with passive solar heat build-up all the time. For example if it is only 105 degrees F in the shade and you leave you car parked in the open sun (and don't leave some windows open a crack) the inside temperature can easily reach 185+ degrees F. Animals and small children have died here being left in parked cars.

I've looked at a lot of past postings, Googled about, and looked at other Burg Dubai websites and couldn't easily find anything about a venting system up on top or the solar heat issue.

Does anyone have any info on this one, or is the structure up there engineered so robust that the steel and glass and other infrastructure can easily handle extreme heat build-up… and since they figure nobody is going to be up there anyways except the occasional maintenance guys they're not worried about it?

Hi Land.

Here is a shot of some of the small wings on the spire.

I think the plan is (was - ?) to have single laminated glass over the perforated stainless. We can see louvers to let some heat out. Not sure how many of the louvered panels there are up there.

Makes sense the notches are for airflow though - to let that heat right next to the cladding to rise up the sections rather than let the heat build up.

Thanks so much, Fury, Great pix. Those louvered sections are exactly the kind of venting I was imagining. Even with those I bet it will be hot and stuffy up there on a July afternoon...

Get Ready

Well, Yes and No.

Of course it will be exceptional to see the exterior of the building completed and to see the beauty of it from every perspective possible, but I also think all of the construction and structural junkies on this board are going to go through withdrawals after watching the progress of every floor and every beam as the building has moved skyward over the past years.

There is just a lot more construction eye-candy for everyone when we can look at photos and discuss all the nitty gritty of what and how they are doing things.

Once it is all buttoned up there will be the completion of everything down at ground level, but with limited to almost no access to all of the extensive things that are going on inside a lot of the fun will be over. So get ready to say good bye to the views of the steelwork and all else that has been so captivating on here.

Hopefully the discussion here won't deteriorate off onto a lot of sidebar off-topic posts like it has in the past when construction progress has been slowed.

This building would even look much higher if there were some other smaller skyscrapers around it.
