Hi all.

Nice article Helghast but many inacuracies and/or bullshit ...

Lets go over some points:

- Crane disassembly proceedure in early August - sounds good
- Error - groundbreaking in Sept '04 and later in the article Jan '04. I have a shot from Dec '03 and they are well into the excavation process, I guess Nov '03 was groundbreaking.
- Error - completion date Sept '09. Latest word has that as a soft opening of some areas with completion Dec '09. Some here have talked to others in the project who say completion will be well into '10.
- Error - 888 meters -
- Error - telescopic spire - sigh ... There is another article from the same source from the same day stating the spire (pinnacle) may be jacked more this year. Here is a copy/paste from the UAE BD thread I posted:

If all the jacking equipment is still in place they could add more wing and cladding to tier 24 while the crane is still tall enough. They would have to add cladding to tiers 22 and 23 small wings as well.

1 - I doubt the jacking equipment is still in place.
2 - I don't think the pinnacle is still "loose" from the structure resting on the jacking wheels and the jacking lines - it is most likely welded in place at this point.
3 - Once the crane is lowered any from where it is, adding more small wings under what is there on tier 24 will not be possible.
4 - Once the cladding is buttoned up ( in a month - or so) they are not going to unbutton it all to jack.
5 - The article is probably just another in a long list by confused journalists - confusing a telescopic pinnacle verses one that was jacked into place.
6 - The article could be more subterfuge ( aka bullshit) from Emaar to keep the general public and any competitors guessing.

To summarize ... although not impossible if they do it soon ... Not Bloody Likely
- Error - the tiers above tier 24 are the maintanance areas - The floor area of the small wings up there is equal to a bathroom - and a small one at that. The tiers used as maintanance areas start at tier 16 where there is ~ 400 sq. m. floorspace. Not that they can't use the space above tier 24 the maintanance areas don't start there.
- It looks like the crane disassembly proceedure hasn't been revised from the original plan except as I posted a page or 2 ago that the crane on level 99 is a Favco that was previously used up top instead of an Ogawa, and that the small recovery crane will be a Favco SSD 5/15 instead of a SSD 3/10.
- Error - 22 million manhours. I have a shot from Imre from April '08 showing over 39 million manhours and over 7000 workers. I'd guess we are well over 55 million manhours now (esp. with 9800 workers now) and will be over 60 to 70 million by completion. Wow - what a huge project in those terms !

It is nice to see the media is still interested in doing articles on this thing. There was a lull in articles for a while now. I wish they would make sure to get their facts straight - like talking to some at SSC.

Burj Dubai could still soar higher

By

Sona Nambiar on Monday, May 25, 2009

It is possible to raise the spire on Burj Dubai, it has been confirmed by a senior official at Emaar. Market talk has been rife about the possibility of a new height by end-2009, higher than the "reported" 818 metres.

"It is possible to jack up the spire from the inside of the building. What we have built has been designed for every situation," said Greg Sang, Project Director at Emaar Properties. Burj Dubai is expected to open by the end of this year, against its original completion date of late 2008.

IMHO it would look retarded if the spire were to be jacked up even more.

These are businessman, it is absolutely right what they say. They could raise the spire, but it certainly wont happen. The only reason why they are saying this is to feed the rumors and get even more attention by the media and the public.

Here are some reason why there will be no height increase:

#1 - They would have to increase 1 tier by 70 metres which would definitely ruin the design and would make it look awful.

#2 - They can not simply put 3 intermediate tiers between the existing ones, to make it fit the design, because the steel structure is already finished and would have to be altered.

#3 - There are already BMU's at the top of each tier and no place to add more steel.

#4 - The crane has already lowered itself and is unable to attach further wings to the pinnacle.

They added the wings on the spire after jacking, they can not jack fully added wings, because the steel structure is already surrounding the pipe. The only way to add new wings was the temporary platform at tier 22, which has now been completed, so this can not be done anymore. And now the crane is even lower. All wings, who were directly connected to the spire have been added when tier 22 was not completed. There is no plattform or space to do that anymore.

Like any of you naysayers would even notice 5 meters in height added to the spire.

I agree with Hightec, it's most likely media hype.

There is no point in going higher, since they already have the record and will most likely hold it for many years to come. This tower was designed and built with full knowledge that it will one day be surpassed by another.

Maybe someday, someone will build a tower that can be increased in height indefinitely, but until then I think it's great to have a different "Tallest Building in the World" every few years or so.

IF spire goes eve higher, the weight domination will be transfered from bottom half to the top half. And there is absolutely no need anyway.
