What's to be open in September ?

Usually when they finish a big building, the cranes come down first, then the construction lifts. On the Burj, it's been the opposite - to the outside eye.

The outside lifts have been gone for months, only now the cranes are coming down.

Is it really that the construction elevators have just been moved inside, and that very little will be finished inside for September ?

In recent shots taken at night, we have seen only a few lights on inside, mainly below the 1st mech levels 17/18. One night we saw a picture with all the lights on - on level 20, but almost nothing at all above that.

The Burj does not yet look like a building getting ready for business two months from now. Usually there would be a lot more lights, and other evidence of inside activity.

Have we seen delivery of food prep and storage equipment - for the hotel ?

Have we seen a call to hire and train staff ? or will they just bring in a few staff from other facilities to run a small operation for a few months ??

We still have not seen any direct evidence of what's going on inside.

When the crane-removal show is over, --and I wish them well and safety--, there's not much more for outside eyes to see directly - so can some experts get some cameras going to show us what happeniong inside ?

Please and thank you

Hi all.

Great shots OTR and 234.

I see that some BMU's have been in service doing cladding. Can any of these be used for lifting material from the ground during ongoing maintenance of the building, or will they just use materials/tools etc already raised by elevators inside ?

Thank you
Hi Library.

Not sure of the exact number. I know from pics there are BMU's on :
the terraces of tiers 19, 21, 25, 26, and 27 and on the second, third and fourth mech areas. There was to be one hanging from the top platform but that has been revised. I read somewhere there is (was) to be a dozen or so in total. I would imagine the BMU's will not be used to lift anything from the "ground" but perhaps.

They have been using the internal lifts as construction lifts for some time. I think there are no temp. internal construction lifts.

I hear you on the 09 09 09 date coming up quickly. Perhaps the soft opening will only include some of the lowest levels. It has been mentioned by a few of the Dubai guys that both the soft opening (09 09 09) and the grand opening (09 12 20) dates are unreasonable.

Yes I agree that after the crane disassembly proceedure is done there won't be much to see but there are some things. The cladding, landscaping, and BMU testing are some that come to mind.

As I have posted before Emaar suspended site visits after the basejumping incedent. I see there are still some chosen few and workers that give us a little joy from internal shots but those are few and far between. Imre has posted some great internal updates from when site visits were permitted. OTR gave us some great stuff from the podium and was nearly beheaded for doing so ( an exageration but things did get uncomfortable for a few hours for him). You can bet any and all of our Dubai photogs would be filling our screens with internal shots if it was possible.

On another note I have made version 5 of my plan which includes some added prints and has expanded to 13 pages. Also I have revised my tier methodology to reflect the lack of a top platform and some wording changes.
Minor stuff but here it is for anyone who is interested.

As i read in the Gulf News paper that the cranes would be dismantled at the beginning of August so 2 me i think they r thinking of a grand opening on 1 January 2010 as because the project was delayed and the lost the date of the opening 1 Jan 2009

Burj Dubai architect makes sick US boy's wishes come true

Staff Report
Published: June 28, 2009, 08:38

Tustin: Chance Mitchell, aged six, uses his Lego blocks and cardboard to construct his own super-structures. He also has to wear a pacemaker for the rest of his life.

He keeps a scale model of the Eiffel Tower at his Temecula home, but there's just one building model he's got to have – the 160-storey Burj Dubai tower, the world's tallest building which is nearing completion.

Chance became interested in the Dubai tower about a year ago, during an internet search for the world's tallest building.

The Californian reported that Mitchell is the latest recipient of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Orange County and the Inland Empire.

At the organisation's Wish House in Tustin, he received a four-foot scale model of the Dubai tower, built especially for him by Minnesota-based Red Eye ARC, as well as autographed original drawing of the structure, and a full-colour photo book by architect Adrian Smith.

But the day's highest point was the half-hour video web chat with Smith himself.

During their chat, Smith fielded a range of questions from Chance, from the number of residents the building can hold (up to 10,000), to whether the project will meet its projected September 2009 deadline.

The Burj Dubai will be completed by December, Smith said.

"What a blessing," said Chance's mother, Melissa Mitchell. "To share his life with us, this is amazing. I mean, this is a world-renowned architect taking time out of his life for a 6-year-old."

Chance has atrial septal defect, a condition in which the septum - the wall separating the heart's left and right chambers - has a hole. That causes the oxygen-rich blood from the left side to flow into the right, mixing with the oxygen-poor blood and returning to the lungs with it. That decreases the heart's efficiency, because a mix of oxygen-rich and -poor blood is being returned to the lungs, instead of all oxygen-poor blood.

Congenital cardiovascular defects such as ASD occur in about one percent of births, according to the American Heart Association.

Last Thursday some kind of statue is being shown, I added another photographer to the crowd. The statue itself looks rubbish...
