I am talking about the crane that is currently on the highest position on the tower.

I guess it's no surprise really regarding the ''delay'', however, in my mind the extra time should equate with a quality of finish as high as possible even if understaffed with workers.

Don't see the reasoning nor aesthetics (proportion) in 888m as oppossed to what is there now, so i'll reserve some doubt for now.

Hi all.

The Burj Dubai is 818.0 meters high as measured from the floor of the ground level to the top of the pinnacle as per the plans. The CTBUH may start their official measurement at the floor of the concourse level and may include the beacons on top - when they do it after completion. In other words the way they measure to get the 818 will not change - it's just the way the official measurement may be done might add a possible 6.6 meters at the most.
This 888 number is just another in a long line of bullshit that comes from all the secrecy surrounding this project.

Another legacy of all the secrecy is the press releases stating yet another delay of the completion date. I posted a few pages ago a part of the 2 year old planned list of milestones that clearly states the completion date in Feb. 2010. Emaar and every other major player in this project knew long ago the released completion dates were bullshit. I'm not saying the Feb 2010 is written in stone - it probably has been revised - to later. As Imre posted the word of the workers on the site are saying Dec. 2009 is also not realistic. I fully expect the general public will be getting at least one more press release saying the completion date will be pushed back even more.

I have never been a fan of the secrecy crap antics being practiced by Emaar. I know it is part and parcel to the fact that the sheik has the final say on any and everything in Dubai but I wish it was more open. Emaar goes so far as to strongarm private peoples' websites forcing them to remove anything to do with height numbers or plans - utter horseshit bordering on paranoia.

The point is if things were more open we wouldn't have to put up with height rumors and unrealistic completion dates.

Hi Fury mate!

I have always bet to myself that Burj Dubai will be inaugurated just in time for the New Years' Eve of 2009-2010 with lots of fireworks and celebrations. The passage to a new number (2010) will be quite symbolic and a tremendous marketing hype. Believe me. Bookmark this post

That's a fact that everyone in the western world understands.
Dubai dosen't have a tradition of democracy, thus they don't understand people.

How deep does the building go? Some plans label the levels from the lowest point of the structure. That could have confused someone who didn't know what he was looking at.

what's the reason there's no progress in the last few months? is it because of the crisis?

They remove the main crane some days ago and they only need to clad the last tiny floors and the part freed by the main crane and the mechanical floors BMU's gates to install too. There is already progress on the annex cladding.

Hi Ricardo.

I hope you are right - that still gives them just under 6 months. With 10,000 people alot of work can be done in a half a year.

Hi Nomadd.

True - if the labels didn't have any numbers. The lowest level is the raft level (my label) that is unused at 15.25 meters below the ground level.

Here is page 13 of my plan for reference.

See there it already shows just how fast they can be. Only a few days since the high tower crane was removed and you can already see lots of formwork in place to cast the holes left by the supports. In fact, some of the holes are already filled in (or look like they're about to be poured at any rate)

Thanks 234.

The annex is quite imposing from that angle, nice shot.

I first thought they were only adding a couple of floors though... Did they double the original height?

Yes, it was more or less doubled.
