T'PURAM: President Pratibha Patil will arrive for a one-day visit to the state, her maiden one as President, on November 1, Kerala Formation Day.

The Chief Minister said that the detailed programme was still being worked out. Contrary to expectation, President Pratibha Patil will not lay the foundation stone for Indian Institute of Science Education and Research at Chettachal, near here.
Cheers!!!

Nadayara-Kozhithottam canal stretch to be developed

The government has chalked out plans for the development of 12.7-km stretch between Nadayara Kayal and Kozhithottam Kayal of the Thiruvananthapuram-Kollam section of the T.S. Canal within the next two years for operating boat services and cargo vessels and to link it to National Waterway III.

The government will soon invite tenders for developing the stretch. It is major stretch in the 60.5-km-long Thiruvananthapuram-Kollam section of the T.S. Canal. The 722-m-long Sivagiri tunnel and the 355-m-long Chilakoor tunnel in the stretch are the main bottlenecks in the waterway

See what Sunday Times says.

It has just over one million people, is rich in history and architecture, and has some of the best educational facilities in the nation.

Eventually, I ended up in Kovolam village, an interesting mix of Indian life coupled with Western-style resorts. The town itself wasn't what you'd call "touristy'' - it was still very much India and a beautiful place to explore.

Accentia Technologies on expansion mode

TECHNOPARK-based Accentia Technologies has acquired Denmed Medical Transcription, a US-based BPO company operating in Portland.

According to a statement here on Wednesday, the Denmed Medical Transcription with an employee base of 120 professionals, was acquired for 3 million US $. This is the third BPO unit in the US that Accentia has taken over.

‘‘We are happy to become part of a company that represents India’s superiority and long-term experience in the BPO zone,’’ said Scott Schram and Debbie Schram, president and CEO respectively of Denmed .

‘‘Though we have taken over the company, Denmed’s directors will continue to be part of Accentia as shareholders and officials,’’ Accentia’s CEO Pradeep Viswambharan said.

Accentia will soon acquire one BPO company each in Minnesota and Florida in the US and Hyderabad, Belgaum and Hubli in India, he added. Negotiations are underway and the details will be concluded by the end of this month.

The reports say that the bidders, who include international giants like Maersk and PSA, had asked for more time to complete their bids. After all it is a Rs 5000 Crore project, the largest in Kerala, it will take time to make bids for it. So lets wait and see.

This waterway has the potential to change the tourism map of Kerala in a radical manner. The Trivandrum - Kumarakom backwater cruiser route can be opened up via Nadayara-Ashtamudi-Vembanad which will provide upto 200 Kms of travelable routes for even the largest houseboats.

Instead of having to simply anchor out in the Vembanad Lake, cruise boats can traverse nearly one-third the length of Kerala along serene backwaters. Also, the tunnels at Varkala are unique in India and perhaps the world, in being exclusive boat tunnels, which are nearly 130 years old. They alone should prove to be a tourist magnet.

I have seen the same figure mentioned in the reports about the CM's road show at Bangalore, along with an investment figure of about Rs 6000 Crores.

Technocity will have 507 acres of developable land = 22 million sq.ft

Large developments like Technocity achieve an overall FAR or Global FAR of about 1-1.5. 1.5 can be achieved if highrise construction is employed. Technocity will have a height permit of upto 152 m AMSL (about 45-50 floors) without an NOC from AAI, as per design guidelines.

A GFAR of 1.5 on 507 acres of land yields 33 million sq. ft of space which is roughly what the reports talk about. So I guess it looks feasible enough.

- Nice pix, Chandru. The skyline is getting quite crowded with buildings of the old and the new eras.
