No job worries for Utar grads

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 90% of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) graduates are employed within the first six months of completing their studies.

“Five per cent of them opt to pursue postgraduate studies while 1% of them are self-employed,” said Utar president Prof Datuk Dr Chuah Hean Teik.

Future generation: Dr Hou (left) sharing a light moment with First Class Honours Chemistry graduate Ngeow (right) and other fellow graduates at the seventh Utar convocation ceremony at Wisma MCA yesterday.

Utar graduates enjoyed excellent employment opportunities, both locally and internationally, he said on the second day of Utar’s seventh convocation at Wisma MCA here yesterday

He advised graduates entering the job market to continually review, update and expand their knowledge and skills during the course of their careers, as university education was just a foundation.

Among those who were already hired before they even graduated was Ngeow Nyuk Jane who is now a quality assurance technician.

A First Class Honours graduate of Bachelor of Science (Honours) Chemistry, Ngeow said her training gave her the confidence to enter the workforce.

V. Parshena, 23, who started working as a tender executive last month, said her experience at Utar had trained her to become an independent and creative thinker.

A total of 3,121 graduates received their scrolls during the convocation held over three days.

Deputy Higher Education Minister Dr Hou Kok Chung was the guest-of-honour.

The convocation also marked the graduation of UTAR’s pioneer batch for two Master’s degrees and three Bachelor’s Honours degrees – Master of Computer Science, Master of Information Systems, Bachelor degree in Applied Mathematics with Computing, Bachelor in English Language and Bachelor of Business Administration.

Utar gets RM1.2m for creative industries
Tuesday July 14, 2009

Boost for education: Ong (second from left) witnessing the mock cheque
presentation and signing ceremony between the Star Foundation and Utar
for the establishment of the Chair at the university’s campus in Petaling Jaya
yesterday. With him are (from left) Dr Mohd Aminuddin, Dr Chuah and Utar
Faculty of Creative Industries dean Dr Carmen Nge

The Star Foundation pledges funds to develop creative industries

PETALING JAYA: The Star Foundation embarked on its first charitable foray in the education field by giving RM1.25mil to Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman to promote the development of creative industries.

Under the agreement signed by both parties at the university here yesterday, the foundation will donate RM250,000 annually for five years to the university to establish a Chair to be known as the Star Foundation Professor of Creative Industries.

The amount will be used mainly for the employment of a Professor to hold the Chair.

The Professor will conduct teaching as well as research and development in the various fields of creative industries.

MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat, who witnessed the signing ceremony, said there was an increasing need for Malaysia not to solely rely on traditional industries but also venture out to other fields such as creative industries to boost economic growth.

“The creative industry is a relatively new but fast growing field that focuses on the creation of unique intellectual property, content or design that previously did not exist,” Ong said, citing advertising, graphic design, games design and film-making as examples of areas in the industry.

Ong, who is also Transport Minister, said Malaysia would be embarking on new phases of economic and social development where ideas and innovation would be central in strengthening the country’s economic competitiveness.

“Thus, it is important for us to closely examine the possibilities of the restructuring and expanding the field of creative industry so that we will be able to chart our country’s future economic growth,” he added.

Ong said it was not sufficient for Malay-sians to be consumers of global creative content.

Star Foundation executive committee chairman Datuk Dr Mohd Aminuddin Mohd Rouse said the foundation has agreed to focus its attention on education, health and welfare in channelling its donations.

“If there is a body or organisation that encompasses some or all of those elements as part of its activities, then they are truly deserving not only of funds from us but other charitable bodies as well,” he said.

He added that the foundation had also approved a donation to the Yayasan Pendidikan Bistari for its noble effort in setting up the TRAIN (Technical Resource and Internship Network) programme which aims to promote and co-ordinate vocational training for school dropouts.

Utar president Prof Datuk Dr Chuah Hean Teik said the Chair would be established at the Faculty of Creative Industries at the university’s campus here.

Utar to offer medical courses soon
Sunday August 9, 2009
By SHAUN HO

KUALA LUMPUR: The Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman will be offering medical courses soon which the Government hopes will stem the shortage of doctors in Malaysia.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, who announced this, said that only 53% of all positions in government hospitals for doctors were taken up and the Government was forced to hire 700 contract doctors to fill the void.

He said many facilities including intensive care units and operating theatres were under-utilised because there were not enough qualified staff to run them, thus the need to increase the number of doctors.

“Facilities in local hospitals need to be expanded to cater for more housemen. Not all universities have hospitals to provide training for housemen. We have 135 hospitals but only about 50 of them can cater for housemanship.

“Our target is one doctor to 600 patients. Our current ratio is one doctor to 1,145 patients, so there is a lot of room for improvement,” he told reporters after presenting scrolls to Utar graduates during a convocation ceremony at Wisma MCA yesterday.

The convocation is being held over three days and involves 2,895 graduates.

One of them, public relations major Elizabeth Helena Ayu always dreamt of giving advice for a living and she recently got a job as a financial consultant with a firm in Kuala Lumpur.

She is also pursuing a Master’s degree in corporate communication on a part-time basis. Her three elder siblings are also pursuing their Master’s degrees.

Her father, Ayu Laku admitted it was a drain on the family’s finances putting four daughters through university but they helped lighten the burden by working part-time.

walk further from the block I got a small path to an empty land, no construction works.

I heard UTAR main gate will be set at batu karang, further north from block I, but not in three years.

UTAR have very bad planning in bicycle parking spaces, always not enough parking bay for bicycles.

UTAR’s a vibrant and pulsating community
Thursday March 4, 2010

OFFERING a comprehensive array of 84 Foundation Certificate, Degree, Bachelors (Honours), Masters and Doctorate programmes spread over four campus locations, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) prides itself on being a centre of academic excellence.

UTAR will be showcasing its courses at the Star Education Fair 2010 this weekend, and the courses, among many others, include psychology, Chinese studies, journalism, accounting, entrepreneurship, financial economics, computer science, IT engineering, electronic engineering construction management, biomedical science and biotechnology.

There are also several newly launched and market-driven programmes such as environmental engineering, petrochemical engineering, industrial engineering and statistical computing and operations research.

Its four campuses – the UTAR Perak Campus, UTAR Petaling Jaya Campus, UTAR Kuala Lum- pur Campus and UTAR Sungai Long Campus, currently boast a combined total of 18,000 stu- dents and 1,300 academic and administrative staff.

Its newest campus in Kampar, Perak, has seen a 17-fold increase in student population from 500 in May 2007 to 8,700 now.

With facilities to accommodate over 16,000 students, the well-equipped UTAR Perak Campus – shielded from the bustling city and surrounded by panoramic lakes – provides a serene and peaceful environment conducive for students’ learning and recreational activities.

Located at the heart of the campus is the student pavilion, which houses a cafeteria, gymnasium, student affairs department, counselling rooms, banking facilities and a book shop. Other facilities include an aerobics and dance studio, and a multi-purpose sports complex.

Its sprawling campus attracts an international line-up of students and staff. Among them is Afghan student, Hazrat Wali, currently pursuing his degree in Information Systems Engineering.

“I chose to further my studies here as Malaysia is a peaceful and more importantly, a modern Muslim country, which makes me feel at home,” he said.

“There are no problems with culture, halal food, accommodation or communication. This is an ideal environment to study with minimal distraction,” Wali said.

Fees at UTAR are also affordable, with degrees costing between RM30,000 and RM40,000 for the entire duration. Those with financial constraints are also able to apply for PTPTN loans, UTAR scholarships and interest-free UTAR student loans, as well as external ones.

As the campus is located near a residential area, students can also easily find accommodation within walking distance. The university promotes a healthy lifestyle, and encourages its students to cycle to campus, while others utilise the shuttle bus.

In line with its ethos of wholesome development, UTAR encourages its students to participate in various extra-curricular activities to hone their skills and talents beyond the classroom. There are 41 different clubs and societies to choose from.

The campus is also a hive of acti-vity, with regular blood donation campaigns, orientation week, inter-faculty sports competitions, sports carnivals and prom nights. Coun-selling and guidance services are also available.

The first intake of medics is in May. Will be at the Sg. Long campus. Quoted from a tea meeting with the president. The building in Sg. Long was bought for RM 35mil.

my friend say they modified the original masterplan. the block A (heritage hall) is bigger when proposed, scaled down maybe because of fund problems. our hall is too small to hold convo... i think.

the medical, i think UTAR is too ambitious. because of opening medical course need huge funds, some courses may be neglected. and another important thing is, UTAR chose kampar as it's main campus is a mistake, it's hard to find lecturers to come over kampar to teach. should build their campus in nilai or ipoh. kampar is abit too far away from urban areas, and boring... maybe unite those 3 campus into one in klang valley?
