It's getting complicted though when you've got more than a single line. Vienna has 29 of them. Just imagine they'd have all names like "Cincinnati Bell Connector", it would be utter chaos. Instead they re labelled with numbers or single letters, as it should be. Well, colour schemes are also ok I think.

The best thing would be if the streetcar line in Cincinnati would be integrated into the bus numbering scheme somehow, like T1 or at least CBC.

While some people are looking at the "Cincinnati Bell Connector" name as a negative, I prefer to look at is as a positive. For years, the streetcar opponents said, "no local companies will ever support the streetcar."

Now, we have Cincinnati Bell stepping up and paying over $3 million for the naming rights; and station sponsorships and on-vehicle ads have been sold to the University of Cincinnati, Jack Casino, numerous real estate agencies, breweries, restaurants, and even a car dealership. The city has now raised more than double the amount they expected to raise from advertising revenue.

On top of that, I expect the ridership to far exceed the original estimates. When the original feasibility study was done, ridership was estimated at 3,700 per day. However, that estimate assumed that the streetcar would open in 2010. (It was delayed several times due to political reasons.) In the six years since 2010, a tremendous amount of residential and retail development has occurred in our Downtown area. That's a lot more people living, working, or otherwise spending time in the downtown area that are likely to use the streetcar.

There are two extensions that are likely to happen with the streetcar: south into Newport, Kentucky, and north to the Uptown area (University of Cincinnati). In either case, the system will be operated as one single line, so there is not yet a need to introduce route numbers. Now, if both extensions were build, we might end up with two routes (Newport to Over-the-Rhine; and Downtown Cincinnati to Uptown). But that's probably not going to be an issue within the next 10 years. Cincinnati Bell also has the "right of first refusal" to sponsor any extensions. So even an extended route would likely still be called the Cincinnati Bell Connector.

How the streetcar shaped Cincinnati

It's July 4, 1877, and all of Cincinnati is on Lock Street. At least it feels that way. Looks that way, too[...]

This isn't the last of the pointless downtown streetcars. We will see a few more open up in El Paso, Oklahoma City and maybe even Anaheim in the coming years

sorry, pics are a bit too large. Press Ctrl - (Control-minus) a few times to view in normal size. Then return back with Ctrl + (Control-plus).

Just because it doesn't transport people from the suburbs to downtown doesn't mean it's pointless. Plenty of people will be using it to get between the many destinations in our urban core that are way too far apart to walk between. At the south end of the line, we have a hugely popular new riverfront park, two stadiums, and a new development with tons of retail, apartments, and office space. At the northern end we have a hugely popular brewery/brewpub and farmers market. In between, we have the city's most popular restaurant and bar district, several major parks and public squares, museums, hotels, theatres, and tons of new apartment developments, not to mention the fact that we have 65,000 office workers downtown every day. I predict we will easily blow away our ridership estimates and people will soon be calling for expansion to reach even more of the residential population near the center city.

True, it seems to be a good starter line, but I think its potential could be vastly increased if it were extended north to the university campus.

I hope it does better than Atlanta's streetcar, which is considered an abject failure by even the most ardent transit geeks.

Cincinnati Bell Connector sees more than 50K streetcar rides in first weekend

50,000 rides? I don't know what you think, but to me that sounds quite impressive to say the least.

Ridership figures during the novelty phase of operation are irrelevant.

Undeniably true: Tucson SunLink carried roughly 60˙000 riders during its first three days of operations, almost twice as many tried KC Streetcar in the same time frame (~32˙000 pass.), and yet Kansas City now has a two-and-a-half times bigger daily ridership - with a rather shorter route, too.

Moreover, in this case figures for this first weekend are somewhat fostered by the fact that they started to charge the fare only from Monday: those who merely wanted to experience it have "rushed" aboard until the ride was free.

It seems if the route services a dense area or an up and coming dense area that it does well...as opposed to a low density area or sprawly area ie Atlanta and Tucson...
