People mentioned this before in the past, but rapid transit in cities like Cincinnati more more sense than in more auto-centric cities of the Sunbelt like Charlotte. Ironic thing is that increasingly more people and politicians(even conservative ones)in Sunbelt cities are more supportive for better transit than those in the Midwest.

What is the reason for that? Is it maybe because the greater shortcomings in PT quality (or maybe even utter lack of it at all) makes the issue a more pressing one?

Good question. It's not like Cincinnati has good public transportation. The state of Ohio only spends less then $30 million on public transport IIRC.

That's a very good question and a very difficult one to answer without getting too political.

Despite the fact that the majority of Ohio's residents either live and work in urban areas, or live in suburban areas and commute into the cities for work, the state provides almost no funding for transit. As a result, the cities and counties must fund their own transit systems. The federal government has often provided funding for buying buses or streetcars. The state sometimes provides funding for rural transit systems but not for urban transit systems.

Several cities in Ohio (including Cincinnati and Cleveland) are going to have to substantially cut their transit service next year if they can't pass local taxes to support them, since the state won't be providing any more funding.

It's a shame because Ohio has several large cities spread across the state. If we had quality mass transit within our cities, and quality transit linking the cities together, it would be a great place to visit and explore without a car. But unfortunately our state leadership is only interested in building roads and highways.

Maybe it's due to strong lobbying from the auto industry?
