The real Netherlands

You probably all know the city center (with the coffeeshops) of Amsterdam and the Skyline of Rotterdam. But we have another 50 or so other small, medium and bigger sized cities(den bosch, maastricht, groningen, utrecht, the hague, eindhoven, breda..etc etc.) with let's say 50.000 to 300.000 citizens. A big percentage of these cities have (big) neighborhoods like shown in the following serie. Many Hundred-thousands houses where built in this style after the WO2. Some are stilll nice, some are getting a bit crappy, some are almost ghetto-ish. A lot of them are being reconstructed and renovated, some completely torn down.

This is a walk trough a few neighborhoods north of the city center of Zwolle, in the middle-eastern part of the Netherlands. These are not the best parts of town, but certainly not ghetto's .

Its weird how similiar they are to alot of the postwar estate areas in Britain, except that they're not as worn looking as the ones here (in the UK)

Good series, that's your typical post-wart neighbourhood in the Netherlands!

Holland is impressive -- definitely my most favourite country in Europe.

As for Zwolle-- do the majority of the people in Zwolle live in flats and apartments ?

Nope. Zwolle does exist out of large suburban areas.

I hope our neighborhoods as shown above won't turn into neigborhoods as showed in the topic "decay in Detroit". But i think the Dutch government is too controlled for letting that happen.

I hope you won't get offended, but those pics look just like England! I never thought I'd see those kind of streets outside of the UK.

Even the crappiest neighborhoods in the Netherlands look decent compared to most other countries. Certainly NOT beautiful, but decent.

Another example that the Netherlands is the country that's most like the UK on mainland Europe

That doesn't have to be positive. All those dark corners create some sort of "social unsafety".

honestly doesn't look bad.

i think the majority is that things aren't let out of hand. I didn't see tall grass, but instead, lush green CUT grass.

I visited the country this past summer, its a very clean, neat country. Amsterdam seemed to be the real difference, but from what I hear. Amsterdam is like a completely different place compared to the rest of Holland in many ways.

Amsterdam has a lot of social housing from pre-WW2, which was built by famous architects and rich social housing companies. They bought a lot of land in WW1, when it was very cheap, that's how they got so successful.

But Amsterdam also has enough neighbourhoods like these (far outside the centre). A lot of them however are being demolished or renovated.

Yes, this is the real Netherlands, only a part of it! Don't worry, we have many nice neighborhoods. This is only an ugly part of the nice city Zwolle.

A few other neighborhoods in Zwolle. This is Zwolle South, a neigborhood with 33.000 inh. build in 1978-1998. This is where i live.

Everything seems to be a little bit smaller in the Netherlands... how can worlds tallest people live in worlds smallest row-houses
besides that, very interesting pics. Most of the shown neighborhoods look not very wealthy but livable.

That's quite correct, there are a lot of other countries where neighborhoods aren't wealthy too but also not livable (piles of trash, abonded houses, gangs, very high crime). In Holland most of these neighborhoods have crime too, but way less then in other countries. There are no no-go area's, streetgangs don't shoot you when you tresspass 'their' street.
