I don't really understand how a county can't be a local government. Unless it is 30,000sqkm (and very few US counties are), they're local. When you have metro areas split into at least a half dozen counties, how can you not call those "local government"?

I demand this thread be renamed "The Starbucks Thread."

Only because reading this thread is like walking into a Starbucks. Tourists and Locals alike discussing random shit I can never understand.

The Starbucks in Thunder Bay is located in the Chapters beside Walmart. Middle aged suburban women go there to feel cultured.

Counties are just the subdivisions of states, not much more. They offer local services, like in unincorporated areas, but municipalities are the true local government.

In Canada, municipalities are just a branch of the provincial government. That is how it has the right to reorganize them at will.

And also why the Ontario Municipal Board can over rule towns planning departments and rule in favour of developers 99% of the time.

Well, to be fair, most of what they have to decide on is trivial NIMBY bullshit. The last OMB hearing in my city was a bunch of people who live beside the highway protesting a truck stop.

Down here its a bit more involved, like the fight over the David Dunlap Observatory lands

If you read the OP you can see it is meant as "off topic" thread

So, who is this Kathleen Wynne lady who's all over Ontario news? Is she Ivor Wynne's daughter or sister?

She is our new premier. I don't think she has any relation to Ivor Wynne; She grew up in Richmond Hill and he was a city councillor in Hamilton in the 1970s.

She is also a lesbian, which has seriously pissed off the 17 people who still worry about sexual orientation in this province.

Did you guys know that aerial/pseudo-satellite imagery from 1934 is available for the Niagara Regional Municipality in Google Earth? There's plenty of cool things to look at. Here's some that I was particularly interested in.

~ For those of you familiar with Sherkston Shores, east of Port Colborne, the land's original use as a quarry is visible. The quarry hole is there, and little roads to the lake where rocks are delivered for shipping seem to be visible. There's no barge offshore, which beached there in 1961.
~ An old hockey arena in Grimsby, built in 1914 and burned in 1949, is visible. The Montreal Maroons used the place for training camp as early as 1924, and into the mid-1930s. The Saskatchewan Sheiks also held training camp there in the 1920s. Although originally built as a cold storage facility for fruit to be shipped out, it was also used as a skating rink in the winter, and was one of the 7 first arenas in the world with artificial refrigeration.
~ It's amazing to see how many fruit orchards are around the Lake Ontario shoreline. It seems that most are gone to residential development over the decades, and some are now vineyards or other agricultural uses.
~ You can see how much Niagara Falls, particularly the Canadian side, has eroded in 80 years.
~ In Niagara Falls, on the American side, you can see the old hydroelectric canal that once went right through the middle of town. You can also see the old hydroelectric plant, just north of the Rainbow Bridge.
~ Fort George in Niagara-on-the-Lake looks somewhat abandoned, with trees growing along the garrisons. Fort Mississauga, on the other hand, is still intact, and is surrounded by the golf course.
~ The fourth Welland Canal is dug and in use, but the previous canals are still visible. The third canal, which cuts diagonally across what is now the North End (the footprint is still visible due to lack of development), has been freshly filled in. The second canal is still flowing through Neptune's Staircase in Merritton, and through Thorold.

If anyone has ever driven or rode along the Niagara Parkway between the Peace Bridge and Chippawa in Fort Erie and Niagara Falls, you'll notice some modern houses. There are three that I know of, and maybe there are more in the area. The one that I know about is Riverhouse Niagara, which was built in 2009 by Zerafa Studio. I'm guessing the others are by the same firm, although they don't show up on Zerafa's website.

Riverhouse Niagara, 11627 Niagara Parkway

751 Niagara Parkway

11067 Niagara Parkway
