The new 12-unit residential building would replace a historic 6-story red brick building. I don't know what kind of impact a tower with that kind of design on the Lower Manhattan skyline.

well i guess i'm the only person on this forum, but i think the new design is glorious, far better than calatravas effort. I like the exoskeleton design, it's simple and boxy whilst being very interesting. It almost pays homage to the WTC with this design. Tall and square is what american skyscrapers should be, doesn't mean they can't look good!

Ok finally some news. I guess it will be a much taller but different building though. We'll see.

From the NYPOST...

Quote:
Frank Sciame purchased an additional 110,000 feet of air rights for the 80 South Street parcel along the East River.

The additional air power will bring the project, once slated for a Santiago Calatrava-designed townhouse cube tower, to 300,000 feet.

"It opens up a lot of possibilities," Sciame said, excited at the prospect. "We're considering developing it ourselves and have some international interest. We believe in the site and it makes it a much more viable building."

That's because it could have a much larger base more suited to a hotel, for instance.

"We have views now protected to the north, south and the East River," Sciame added.

According to Wikipedia:
Although 80 South Street has been approved by the city, the project was later canceled in April 2008. The building did not sell any one of its 10 multi-million dollar residential cubes.

New worlds tallest building?

I kid.

Still though, this project essentially just got half-again bigger. Should be interesting to see what Sciame comes up with to use the added air rights.

Yeah, citing Wikipedia here is like taking a high school natural science textbook to a supercollider and showing it to the nuclear scientists on duty. :-)

It's more like just being pointless because half the people who edit the relevant articles on Wikipedia are already on SSC, hence there's nothing new to learn.

It's great to see that a 80 South Street tower is far from dead and may still have an amazing design.

With a tower like that and increased developement in the local area, the chances of it getting done are much higher than before.

The new design looks much better. At least a bit more unique. How come the status on the thread title is on Never Built?
