Apparently, there will be a new architect for 80 South Street and it will be SHoP architects! Howard Hughes is in contract to buy 80 South as they presumably will put the Seaport Tower on the shelf for now because of the opposition they are facing. They can build headache free and supertall to boot here. So the big question is will SHoP build a taller version of the Seaport tower or do a complete redesign? I expect the latter and hope SHoP will design something along the lines of the Steinway. That would be my hope anyways. Excited to see what SHoP will do here.

Yea that is my hope for SHoP. It sounds like Howard Hughes is looking to get this tower thing in on the fast track to get started already.

I can't tell you guys how relieved I was when I read the article. The last proposal was a total disaster. Now let's see what Shop does.

So true, Ghostface79... the updated Morali design made me cringe. Have to get this one right as it looks like there won't be another sizable tower in the area for at least the foreseeable future because of the nimrods, er ... NIMBYs. Hughes will now put all of its energies on 80 South Street and a supertall, maybe a complete redesign as mentioned but have a lot more confidence that SHoP will get it right.

Hope this is true and i hope that the height stays the same or even better increases!
I always found this design just to be awkward, the ugly fake renders didn't help either, but fantastic news of true!

Hey folks, just a quick question, how many square feet of rights does the developer have on this spot? I'd like to approximate how much potential height this spot has

Change of Plans: 80 South Street - read entire article in link
http://newyorkyimby.com/2014/03/chan...th-street.html

Quote:
Plans for 80 South Street are changing once again, as Howard Hughes is looking to become involved with the site; the current owner is Cord Meyer, but Hughes is looking to take a controlling interest in the project.

While the New York Post speculated that Howard Hughes’ interest in 80 South Street was due to the issues encountered at the company’s other Seaport tower, atop the Fulton Fish Market, YIMBY has learned that is not the case, and that Hughes intends to proceed with both projects.

Per a representative from the firm, Hughes has a 100% commitment to move ahead with both the current work at the Seaport and the mixed-use project.
This is good news that Hughes is still planning to develop the Seaport Tower along with 80 South.

With news of Hughes abandoning the Seaport tower didn't quite make sense to me because that project is of-right tower despite the community resistance. If they wish they can just build but I expect they will make the community happy and give something that could be acceptable for all parties. I dunno.. we'll see.

With SHoP expected to be the new architect for 80 South as well, I expect to see a pretty exciting design for a supertall here. Thank god... Moralli design will be out while their initial rendering was not bad, the new one was a head scratcher.

I'm not sure but I remember reading that this has aprox 300k sf, so this will be a slender tower if they build to 1,020'.

Just to give you an idea for comparison, SHoP's other project with the Steinway Tower has 315k sf @ 1,350'.

Since they're still moving forward with the Seaport project, I hope HHS will consider bringing back the Calatrava design (with a more realistic scheme) for this site. Tho if Shop is chosen, I'm confident they'll come up with another great tower.

This building might not reach supertall status if there is indeed a change in architects as the current known design has spacings between every few floors pushing the floor heights higher
However, I hope that SHOP incoorperates a a very slim design with a crown much like 111 West, which would help to compliment 70 Pine Street and the likes

Thanks for the info

I was hoping this would have enough square feet to beat 1WTC in roof height but it looks like that is not a possibility. It would have to be thinner than Steinway to reach such a height and Steinway already is far thinner than 432 Park

If anything it may be taller than the Morali plan. I saw view shots which would indicate this could be ~1,100'. But that's all speculative -- need to wait for more details.

Ah, the bigger the better.... a real supertall outside of the WTC complex! We can only hope for around 1,100ft!

You mean a real supertall outside of the WTC downtown... there are many supertalls under way that are as high/higher than the WTC in midtown.

It's obvious that he meant in downtown only.
