Further proof that the WTC should have been made megatall from the start.

true, but who could have predicted the sheer supertall spree when the WTC was planned?

I kind of like it. Downtown skyline deserves some more supertalls. The days where the WTC solely dominates the skyline are coming to a close anyway. 1WTC isn't even the tallest by roof height in the city anymore.

I am usually a big fan of focal points as well, but in terms of capitalism... it doesn't care about focal points...In the future it won't matter.. The island of Manhattan will fill in and the surrounding areas as well... I think you will see those giant apartment blocks (like Stuyvesant Town) (the land is to vast and valuable) be the next victims of urban renewal... One could build an entire new complex of buildings like Hudson Yards on the site.. there will always be a chase to the sky in Manhattan..

True, 1WTC was massively tall when it was planned (and still is, just to a lesser extent).

It replaced the old WTC with equal height and that's all I ever wanted, I have no problems with other buildings, even in Lower Manhattan going taller. The old WTC would have been surpassed eventually too...

What a nice surprise, another 400m+ building for New York! And the floor count is just massive.

I'm tired of this building site after all this years. I wish they would build something and get it out of the way.

These projects take time, although yea 11 years is a stretch, supertalls don't just get built overnight. I'm sure we'll see some action on this site sooner or later... it is NYC after all

Lets get this building going, due to its location, it will look massive from the outer boroughs and Brooklyn Bridge park area ... would be a nice balance to the WTC on the Hudson side.

This has been quiet for a long time.. is it still a "near" future possibility? Or more like a vision ?

it's definitely not a vision, but nobody seems to know a time frame. The completion date on China Oceanwide Holding's website was early 2016. This might have been an error.

They most certainly have not touched the existing building yet, but they need to get something big built here!

We might finally see some action.

Long-planned South Street Seaport supertall may be on its way
https://ny.curbed.com/2017/5/10/1559...lition-permits

Quote:
Demolition permits have been filed for two South Street Seaport buildings at 80 South Street and 163 Front Street. Although construction plans have not yet been filed with the Department of Buildings, there’s reason to believe that site owner China Oceanwide Holdings intends on constructing a residential and commercial tower as tall as 1,436 feet on the waterfront lot.
....
China Oceanwide Holding began the process of acquiring the sites in 2015, with the sale closing for $390 million in March 2016. The City Planning Commission approved the transfer of 426,940 square feet of air rights to the site the month prior, allowing a building of up to 1,067,350 square feet to rise on the site. Because of zoning restrictions, just about 512,300 square feet of residential space could come to the site.

Curbed has reached out to China Oceanwide Holdings for comment.
