Yeah, per the guys over on the YIMBY forums, new permits were filed in June, and the Oceanwide website says that the building has been certified by the Planning Commission.

documents filed for sidewalk shed and fence installation around 83 South Street. A Demo permit should be soon.

This building better not be another bloody box! I want to see NY involved in building forward looking towers in the style of Chinese beauties like the new stuff in Wuhan and Shanghai and similar cutting edge futurist designs. Get with the times NY! No more 432 Park Avenue style towers please!

welcome back. Since SHoP is reportedly designing this tower, I would expect it to be much more than a skinny, boring box.

Oh jesus no, Chinese towers and the cities they are in are hideous and tasteless (except some parts of Hong Kong which is blessed with at least a few decades of architectural variety)

Blanket statements about whole countries are hideous and tasteless.

What's with everyone complaining about boring boxes in NYC though? Such towers are easily less than 10% of the towers there, even if you only count the more recent ones (last fifty years), there's plenty of variety.

Even if you're into the particular "modern Chinese tower" style as your favourite thing, towers such as One57 or 111 Murray St have everything people like about that style.

And you are so right!
I can't wait to see the first concept for this tower. At the moment (when they don't change the height) it would be the fourth highest tower in NYC. By roof height it would even be the 3rd tallest and that on a location like that in downtown.

The luxury market is slowing down, I wonder if this will get built in this cycle.

Granted, the Chinese tend to put up office towers like so many lean-to's, and often enough they are all just boxes with little distinguishing them from each other, the premier architecture is beautiful. Shanghai, Beijing, Chongqing, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen all have some gorgeous examples of modern towers.

They are certainly great, the best towers of each major city are usually wonderful and most are not tacky.

Wow, One Seaport seems to be getting very skinny. Just looked at google maps to get a sense of "what will be going up where", and One Seaport only has the space of a small parking lot, that is there at the moment.
Edit: Oops, I just realized, that it is already under construction.

As hyped as I am for 80 South Street, but I just realized how "caged in" it will be from adjacent buildings. Sure, they all will be much smaller, but still it doesn't seam very accessible from street level. The elevated FDR drive also seems a little distracting to me. But we'll see how that turns out.
A very cool view will be from Pier 15 though. With seating and a little greenery it will almost seem like an elevated plaza for 80 South Street. Good photo opportunity to say the least.
