IMO, this is the best design for a highrise in Dubai so far.
I admire the engineering and technical features of de BD, and many 300 mts+ towers are sprouting like mushrooms in a rainforest, most taking little risks in their design.
This one, however is a very sexy proposal like none I've seen so far in Dubai, with the exception of the Al-Burj Hotel, maybe.
Another thing I think the architects achieve correctly is how the building meets the ground. In this case, the water. Most of the buildings in Dubai, with the exceptions of a few including the BD, have trouble designing the lower part of the buildings, focusing the design efforts on the crown. Ordinary people, passers-by and users that is, will meet with the bottom of the building all the time, and will only see the crown from afar. That is another fine thing I see about this one.
It seems to me like a piece of smooth cristal suddenly rose up from the bottom of the ocean, creating little waves around it.
I just hope it gets built.

I read once that a lot of these buildings in Dubai are being built only to last 20-30 years because of the cheaper materials they are using. Also, what is Dubai's economy dependent on? Tourism with a splash of international banking? I smell "one of the biggest mistakes the world has ever made" coming.

There are a lot of unreliable sources on the internet, and whatever source that was where you read they are built to last 20 - 30 years was one of them.

Dubai's economy is centered primarily around trade, as it has been for ages. If you would like to read some things that aren't merely trash, read about the Jebel Ali Port.

What architect would design a building to only last 20 yrs. Clearly not true.
