The Finnish traffic culture is quite disciplined, while not always flexible. Kamikaze class overtaking actions are quite rare, with exception of a group of males driving black cars of German or Chinese brand.

This might be an overly specific question, but I'm curious what could be the purpose of an intersection that looks like this? A nice and safe turnoff into impassable forest. Several of these exist near Loviisa, on road 170 immediately to the east of the town, and on the short road connecting road 170 to Vt. 7. Some of them lead onto very poor dirt roads but a few like this one do not connect to any road at all. Are these reserved for some future development? I don't recall seeing anything like that anywhere else in Finland.

As you guess, these typically are for further development. By making such a stub, the traffic on the main road will suffer from a minimal disturbance when it it is time to build the new branch.

The method is not very common, but nor rare either.

A 3,5 km motorway section of VT4/E75 south of Äänekoski was opened to traffic today.

The provincial newspaper Keskisuomalainen states that the motorway will eventually be extended towards north, bypassing Äänekoski, all the way to Mämme. That means some 12-15 of new motorway in total.

Now it will be interesting to see how soon the gap between Kirri and Äänekoski (now a 1+1 road with AADT of 13 000 to 20 000) will be built to motorway. The planning has been going on for decades already. Still, Jyväskylä region has a long long tradition of building motorway stubs…

Kirri-Äänekoski was dropped from the program of 2018, because it was important for the Prime Minister personally to invest into the Hailuoto bridge in his own electorial district and neigborhood. That "happened" to get priority.

No minister in the current cabinet represents the Jyväskylä area. Therefore, no big investements are to be expected. That is the way it works.

Zoom carefully to the lower part of the picture, and you'll see the "end of motorway" signs.

In other words: the motorway is mostly on the other side of the camera.

The article reports that the construction works of the next motorway section (~7.5km) began in August 2017. The section will be opened in June 2019.

The motorway section was (announced to be) opened on 31st October 2017.

OSM shows it "in service".

The road class is not motorway but a road for motor traffic.

Basically, it is a motorway. But politically it is an upgrade, and upgrades are not to be made motorways when Greens are in the Cabinet.

Apart from the westernmost 3 kilometers (1+1 road), there is no technical reason not to call the 27-kilometer upgrade a motorway.

Foreign Bus and Truck Drivers in Trouble in the North

Winter has arrived in the North, and the foreign drivers are reported to be in trouble.

The 250 km section of the road 21/E8 from Muonio Finland to the Norwergian coast is the most problematic road. The road is somewhat narrow, and it has winter conditions for 7-8 months a year. About 150 trucks and buses run off the road every winter. This is quite a lot for a road of AADT 500.

Most of the failing drivers come from other countries than Finland, Sweden, and Norway: especially from the Baltics, Poland, and Romania. The common factors are zero winter driving skills and the equipment not suitable for the arctic conditions. There some gaps in the attitude, too: Because the roads are quiet, the drivers may drive as if they were alone there, but they are not.

The situation irritates the local people quite a lot. There are no alternative routes, and a truck may block the only road for severals hours in several days a week.

A week ago, a Lithuanian charter bus with 30 passengers from Singapore fell off the road after driving only five kilometers in Finland. Minor injuries only.

Finland's Highway Thru Hell

Sounds similar to the problems they experience on Norwegian E6: lots of inexperienced truckers getting into trouble.

I made two videos about bypassing Tampere from east (Lahti/Jyväskylä directions) to north west (Vaasa/Virrat directions) and vice versa.

The first video goes westbound and uses the ring road (roads 9 and 3, motorway), the second video goes eastbound and uses Rantaväylä (literally "shore highway"; roads 65 and 12, not motorway).

The distance between the interchanges of 9/12 and 3/65 is 29.6 km through the ring road and 19.3 km through Rantaväylä, with ramps omitted in each end. The time used was 18'10" and 19'20", respectively.

Despite the 10-km-difference, Rantaväylä took slightly more time. It was a Sunday afternoon; working days affect the traffic conditions even more to the ring road's favour.

Also, the first video features Finland's first motorway tunnel (Karkunvuori, 1993, 0.18 km); the second video features Finland's longest road tunnel (Rantatunneli, 2016, 2.33 km).

Vekaransalmi

One of the few remaining ferries on the inland public roads will disappear soon. A new brigde will replace the ferry at the Vekaransalmi strait on the regional road 438 in the South-East Finland.

The bridge will be 639 meters in length, thus being the fifth longest in Finland. The bridge crosses the inland main waterway, and its vertical clearance will be 24.5 meters to allow the SAIMAX class ships to pass. The cost estimate is about 20 million euro.

The bridge is located on the lake area, and it is full of small and large lakes and islands. The nature is sensitive, and most ship-class vessels must hire a pilot.

One of the reasons to replace the ferry is the timber transport over waters. The payload is about half a kilometer in length, and its edges must be constantly controlled at curves and straits. Such a transport crossing interrupts the ferry traffic for an hour.

There is an interesting historical fact: During the era of Sweden's collapse in the east, the area was the scene of several wars between Sweden and Russia. The brigde crosses the Swedish-Russian border line of 1743-1809.

Archives, 1973

The first phase of the Tampere west bypass (nowadays road 3/E12) was under construction in 1973. The road crosses a lake at Rajasalmi. The bridge is about 310 meters long, and it consists of five steel girder sections. In August 6th, the middle section, which was still floating on pontoons, got loose in a storm. The section is 70 meters long and it weighs 280 tons. Because of the heavy wind, 15 m/s in gusts, the bridge could not be caught and re-anchored.

The bridge sailed 6.5 kilometers until it hit the shoreline of the city of Tampere. Fortunately, it remained undamaged. Because of the winds, it was towed back no earlier than after a week.

Bridge section waiting for being towed back (Helsingin Sanomat)

Route of the bridge

Later, the road was upgraded to a motorway, and two new parallell bridges were built. The initial one serves the local road 13782.
