Government of Romania - Press office - 13.10.2007

This afternoon, Prime Minister Calin Popescu - Tariceanu has met with the Iasi county's local authorities and heads of decontrated services whom he requested to mobilise in order to accelerate the measures necessary to access the European funds, and avoid the danger of missing them.

The Head of the Government has solicited the full rally of the representatives of the local leadership of the Agency for Payments and Interventions in Agriculture for all current delays to be covered within the one month deadline specified by the European Commission.

„We still have a month of efforts in which I request you not to spare any Saturday or Sunday since exceptional measures are needed in exceptional situations ”, Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu has stated, mentioning that he will not hesitate to apply sanctions if this is necessary.
Prime Minister has also drawn the attention on the fact that the responsibility in this field falls both to APIA and local authorities of each county.

The Head of the Government has voiced his availability to support the local authorities' efforts and has urged them to get involved and oversee the solving of substance problems, while putting aside the sterile political rows which lead to useless waste of energies.

„I want to be informed about the problems you encounter. If you encounter problems and you exhaust all your action possibilities, you may appeal to me ”, Prime Minister has added. He reckons that Iasi County has a real potential which should be capitalized in order to turn this county and the entire Moldova into an attractive area for investors.

Under these circumstances, the Head of the Government has especially mentioned the projects of infrastructure development and modernisation in the transportation, health, education and research fields.

Among these, the Head of the Executive has appreciated as essential, the development and modernisation of Iasi Airport, Pan European IX Corridor, which will cross Moldova from north to south and connect the economy of the Moldova counties and Romania to the south and north of Europe, through a road section linked with Brasov-Oradea Motorway.

On the very Saturday, Prime Minister has visited a plant from Iasi industrial platform, whose main activity is PET recycling and has appreciated this investment for its beneficial influence on environment protection and job creation.

Well, Iasi has got something: decency, pride, peace … I do not know what or how to describe it ... Even the poor side (visual I mean) of Iasi doesn’t bother me. It’s a decent poverty; its clean poverty. Well well well… I can only be subjective about Iasi as I love it more than my hometown … so I’ll stop here wishing it all the best and less ex-communists in local council … motherfuckers …

Anyway ... Palas Iasi

One thing I can tell you ... this will be a quality project as Iulius does proper projects

What to see in Iasi ?
www.artline.ro

Culture Palace (Palatul Culturii) : it was officially opened in 1926, in the presence of King Ferdinand (who would die one year later). The project of the building was signed by the architect I.D. Berindei and it took almost took decades for workers to build the impressive house. It was placed on the ruind of the ancient king's court from 1430's, much later rebuilt in a Neo-Classical style by prince Alexandru Moruzi, in 1806 - 1812. The style of today's palace mixes various influences with the Neo-Gothic manner, resulting in a richly ornamented and complicated style, not to be ignored.
Those who come here must surely visit the Gothic Hall, where they can admire the large mosaic, depicting images from a Medieval bestiary, with images of lions, griphins and strange, mythical beasts. Also of interest is the Kings Hall, where you can see portraits of the rulers of Moldavia and the kings of Romania. You could also visit the "Henry Coanda" Hall, on the first floor, decorated according to the inventor's plans. Today, in the Culture Palace you cand find several museums : the Museum of History of Moldavia, the Ethnographic Museum of Moldavia, the Art Museum, the Stefan Procopiu Science and Technics Museum.

The Metropolitan Cathedral and Moldavia and Bucovine : the idea of building a large, monumental cathedral in Iasi originated in the 19thcentury, a dear project to Venianim Costachi, who was then the bishop of the church. Today's Metropolitan Cathedral was built in 1833 - 1839, after the plans of foreign architects Freywald and Bucher, yet when the central vault colapsed, all was abandoned until 1880, and the complex was left in ruin. It was only after 1880 that the building resumed, and all was finished in 1887, the interior paintings being made by Gheorghe Tatarascu, an important Romanian painter. The consecration of the church took place on April 23rd 1887, in the presence of King Carol I. The cathedral is just as impressive today, a monumental church, in a style inspired by the latter Italian Renaissance, while the interior and outside decorations are more towards the Baroque.

"Vasile Alecsandri" National Theatre : built on the site of the old City Hall, in 1894 - 1896, the National Theatre in Iasi is a classical building, considered to be one of the most beautiful theatres in Romania. The original plans were designed by a couple of Vienna architects, Fellner and Helmer, who had previously made several buldings in Vienna, Prague, Odessa. Also, when the theatre was officially opened, it also had an electrical plant, being the first building with electric light in Iasi. It would only be in 1956 that the National Theatre in Iasi was named "Vasile Alecsandri". It is a real work of art, and inside you will find several decorative elements that are simply amazing, such as the courtain, painted by the Viennaartists M. Lenz, with complicated alegorical scenes, both philosophical and historical. Above, on the ceiling painted by Al Goltz, you will also have the chance of admiring several heavenly alegories, scenes with little angels and mythological creatures, very much in fashion at the end of the 19th century.

In the same building one can also find the Opera in Iasi.

Roznovanu Palace (City Hall) : right in the center of the city, there is the old Roznovanu Palace, nowadays hosting the City Hall, one of the most impressive architectural monuments in Iasi, built in the last three decades of the 18th century. The ample structure was restored in 1830 - 1833, when several of the interior and exterior decorations were severely altered, following a new project signed by the well-known architect Johan Freywald. The final plan offered a neo-classical buildings, with rich baroque decorative elements and a large number of interior frescoes and statues. Until 1891 the whole complex was the property of the Rosetti - Roznovanu family - hence the name - one of the richest and most influential families in the region. Afterwards, it was sold to the Romanian state and in 1892 even became Royal quarters, although for a small period of time. During World War I, when the government took refuge here, it also housed several ministries and even the office of King Ferdinand. It was here, in the hall today used by the Local Council, that the War Council of Romania got together in 1918. A historical place, and also a beautiful architectural achievement, the Roznovanu Palace is worth a visit.

"Sf Trei Ierarhi" Monastery : a beautiful religious symbol of Iasi, maybe the most beautiful church here, it was built in 1637 - 1639 by Vasile Lupu, then the ruler of Moldavia, and restored in 1882 - 1904. That time it's aspect was changed dramatically by the efforts of architect Andre Lecomte de Nouy, who managed to keep the outside structure, at the same time reinforcing the structure. The outside decorations - one of the reasons for which the church is unique - are a strange mix of Oriental, Turkish, Armenian, Persian influences and Romanian traditional architectural elements, in an unusual fusion, all carved in stone and, in the past, covered with golden leaf. There are over 30 different decorative models. Inside the church you will find the tombs of Dimitrie Cantemir, the wife and son of Vasile Lupu and even that of Alexandru Ioan Cuza, another important symbol in Romanian history. Close to the church we find the so-called Gothic Hall, with a religious art museum.

Dosoftei House : interesting mainly for those who study old Romanian literature, for it houses the Ancient Romanian Literature Department of the Museum for Romanian Literature. Some of the exhibits are unique in the world, mostly old religious volumes and manuscripts, of tremendous value. This stone structure was built in the last part of the 17th century and at that time was a part of a church complex, later being a printing workshop.

The "Mihai Eminescu" Central University Library : it is one of the best, with a huge and varied collection of books, documents, manuscripts, magazines and newspapers, both Romanian and foreign, some of them of great interest. The building was erected in 1930 - 1934, by the architect Constantin Jotzu and the engineer Emil Prager, and was meant to house the Ferdinand University Foundation, under the king's patronage. In September 1945 the building was chosen to be the new "house" of the Central University Library - founded in 1839. Starting with 1948, the University in Iasi was the administrator of the collections. Nowadays, the Mihai Eminescu Central University Library is one of the four central libraries in Romania, and experts say that it's main advantage is the vast collection of old books.

Al I Cuza University : founded on October 26 1860, it is the oldest university of Romania and one of the most appreciated. The construction of the building we admire today began in 1893 and was completed in 1897, the project being signed by the French architect Louis Blanc. It also has a grand opening, highly formal, with the attendance of King Carol I and Queen Elisabeta, which was one of the most important events in the history of the city. The building itself is an interesting mix between Classical and Baroque influences, while on the inside the interior paintings were recently made by the famous Romanian artist Sabin Balasa.

Copou Park - Eminescu's Lime-tree : both are major symbols of Iasi and both are among the best known and popular tourist attractions in the region, as most of those who come to this city also come here. The park was first put together in 1833 - 1834, but it wasn't until Mihalache Sturza that it was changed to a new, modern garden, following the principles of landscape gardening. Here you can also find the oldest monument in Romania, the Lion Obelisk, made by Mihail Singurov in 1834, the project being signed by Gh. Asachi. This 15 meters tall column, made out of stone, is a symbol of the four european powers who in the 19th century aknowledged the independence of the Romanian provinces. In the center of the park, next to Eminescu's lime-tree, you cand admire two busts, that of the the national poet and that of his good friend, Ion Creanga. In 1984 a museum dedicated to Mihail Eminescu was built close by, being officially opened in 1989, 100 years from the poet's death.

The Botanical Gardens : one of the best in Romania and one of the finest in Europe, the Botanical Gardens in Iasi are a special place, whose history begins in the 17th century, when the idea was first taken into consideration. But only after the Second World War, in 1960, the Botanical Gardens as we see them today were opened, offering visitors the chance of discovering hundreds of rare plants, including a great number of exotic species and more than 800 types of roses.

Ion Creanga Memorial House : a small, poor house, very old - as it was built way before 1850 - in Ticau, a small district of Iasi. Ion Creanga, one of the most important Romanian writers of all times, lived here starting with 1872, until 1889 (the year of his death) and wrote some of his best works in this humble home. In 1879 he had a special guest, his friend Mihai Eminescu, who would remain here for several months, due to the warm welcome and friendship of Creanga. The place became a memorial house in 1918, being the first one in the whole country. In 1989, one hundred years since the writer had passed away, a new, large building was finished next to the memorial house : the brand new documents exhibition, more that fascinating for historians and critics. Although the Ion Creanga Memorial House has lost much of it's popularity, still the number of visitors is impressive, as it is one of the most important tourist attractions in the region.

RED builds EUR 190 million (part of 320 mil. euro investment) business park on Terom site in Iasi
www.business-review.ro/

Real estate developer RED Management Capital will build a EUR 190 million business park in Iasi on a 13-hectare plot, the premises of the former Terom industrial platform, Teodor Pop, one of the RED partners, told Business Review.
The project, called Iasi City Center, will feature 24 buildings and will be similar to the Iride business park concept in Bucharest. Iride was developed by Andrew Stear, the other partner involved in the RED project, and was sold to Austrian investment fund Immoeast in mid-2004.
The project in Iasi will however be bigger than Iride, which covers only 125,000 sqm of lettable area.
The office project in Iasi will be started this year and is expected to take five years to complete. The first buildings will be delivered in the first half of 2009. It will feature 172,000 sqm of lettable area in buildings custom made to clients' demands, says Pop. RED has paid EUR 40 million for the 13 hectares of Terom's land. Terom industrial platform was sold last year, after it was divided in several lots of land and assets.
Overall, RED plans to allot EUR 500 million to Romanian projects in the next couple of years, and has plans to pursue real estate projects in Bulgaria, Ukraine and Turkey. The group has already allotted around EUR 500 million to its ongoing projects in Romania. So far it has invested EUR 200 million in land alone, according to Pop.
This year, the developer will kick off four projects of commercial centers in cities with 20,000 to 50,000 inhabitants, for which the land has already been acquired. Each one, featuring some 5,000 sqm of retail space, will require around EUR 10 million of investments.
RED is also working on two residential projects in Iasi, one in Tatarasi area called Tatarasi Arena and one in Pacurari. The latter, called Colina Soarelui, will be built on 5.5 hectares of land.
The company is partnering with Iasi-based businessman Zaharia Schrotter for these projects and has created a joint venture to carry out the investments, according to previous declarations from RED.
RED bought last year the 18,000-sqm site Tatarasi Arena, a former textile factory, from Syrian businessman Michael Nseir for an undisclosed price. "We have been in charge of all the development, from getting the zonal urban plans to the actual development. We are now in the foundations phase for the project in Tatarasi," RED representatives previously told BR. The project will need around EUR 30 million in investment. Tatarasi Arena comprises seven blocks of flats to be delivered in two stages, by end-2008 and end-2009.
The second project, in the Pacurari area, will have between 500 and 600 apartments in lower rise blocks.
Meanwhile, RED is also pursuing only one of the two planned residential projects in Bucharest, called Natura Residence, and built in partnership with Spanish Grupo Lar.
Nseir recently told a Iasi-based newspaper he had sold the residential project to an investment group with activities in Spain and the US. Prior to this, the site used to host the former Lynx and Michael Com textile factories, owned by Nseir.
RED Management capital is controlled by US investment fund Warburg Pincus and Spanish GED, and by developers Teodor Pop and Andrew Stear. It is financed through investment fund Warburg Pincus 9, worth some $1.5 billion.
Businessman Zaharia Schrotter and his wife Irina, the fashion designer, are among the largest land owners in Iasi.
