LONDON 2007 [2] Shad Thames

Here is a walking tour of the Shad Thames area, just east of Tower Bridge on the south side of the Thames, where there are a number of conversions and new residentials.

Nice area, but extraordinary prices!

Fascinating part of London. Only a couple of days ago I was studying the area on Microsoft local.live.com.

The waterways in that area were the scene of the boat chase at the beginning of The World Is Not Enough?

Also the location of filming for "Resurrection of the Daleks" in Doctor Who (Fifth Doctor). Though it was somewhat more run-down back then!!

I really enjoyed this set.

I used to work by the OXO building and loved exploring this part of London (when it was more down at heel, I must say). London really stands out from other British cities in its use of brick. I love the lighter colours of London brick, and the way brick is used imaginatively to break up any monotony.

On one of my visits to that part of London I made some comparison images of how the area looked at the time of filming 'Resurrection of the Daleks' and how it looks today. Here is a link to the images;

I'm happy that most of the buildings remain intact and seem well looked after in their second life.

Really interesting. Shows how much difference "cosmetic" differences can make at the street level. I've a feeling that one of the earlier Dr Whos was also filmed round here (maybe I am wrong . . . Troughton The Invasion, 1969ish??)

Not too far away from here is the Anchor Pub, which was redeveloped when the Tate Modern opened. Once nice and snug, it suffered one of the most appalling over-restorations I have seen, horribly vandalized by corporate take-over. I can't bring myself to ever set foot in there again.

The redevelopments shown in these collections are much kinder.

Great pictures, once again. This looks like a really interesting area.

I am looking forward to seeing those comparisons, once I am home from work. I'd love to look at them now, but I've goofed off enough for today.
