Nice homes, I can see how this city had an influence on how south central Los Angeles was built. The homes, and what to me look like duplexes, and or flats reminds me a lot of south LA. Even the street side retail look similar.

I've always said Los Angeles and Detroit (having risen to prominence around the same time) have a lot in common from a "built environment" perspective.

very nice pics and tour. the anti-americanism on this forum can be retarded...like when i put up pics of New Orleans and several forumers responded, "oh, i hate typical american cities, they all look the same."

I would guess that most Eastern European cities have at least a few neighborhoods that are in far worse shape than Southwest Detroit...

As many of the countries have roughly 1/5th of the US GDP and a very turbulent past that is very likely!

Anyway interesting pics thanks for sharing mate!

Honestly I do find the area scary - it looks very alien to me..

detroit at least has a sizeable population to work with unlike the many other dying rust-belt towns...there's definitely potential

I don't know. I guess you would have to visit to realize just how welcoming and friendly the people are in southwest Detroit. Hell there is even a new Welcome Center that they just built in the neighborhood for anyone who may want to visit.

Great Britain, for better or worse, is full of urban decay and grit; it's also full of remarkable cities where i didn't feel endangered. a perfect example is Glasgow, Scotland, which is statistically the most violent city in western europe (lots of minor fights, and gang-related knifings in the suburban housing projects,) yet it's also my favorite city in the world. i was also amazed when i was 16 and visited Hungary, and i saw my small host city's gypsy ghetto during a trip: it was literally across the tracks, with no electrical wires running to the buildings, and few windows and doors on the buildings (this was in 1996, so i assume things have improved since then.) even though my high school was near an inner-city housing project in Tennessee, it was still a new, sad level of poverty to me.

"a new, sad level of poverty to me"

It's not the poverty, it's their culture. Don't want to sound like rasist, but everywhere they go it looks the same. Fortunately in Poland we don't have so many gypsies as in Hungary or Romania, but still they make troubles. I used to work as security agent and had to do with them Lack of care for public or other people's property, beggary, theft - that's the way they live, no matter where. There's virtually no unemployment in my place, but You won't meet gypsy in legal work and their kids in school. Yesterday I saw news from Italy, where authorities decided to deport gypsies due to problems they make. Ghetto looked simiilar to the one in Your story. As for Detroit - I live in an industrial city that's got poor reputation too, that in fact is great place to live in, so I'm not fond to stereotypes. But what I've seen in this thread is a bit depressing. The quality of architecture is poor. Boring and/or simlpy ugly tenements or houses allaround the place. Lacks in architectural order. Looks like there was only one factor determining their shape and outfit - low cost. Just like with commieblocks in EE. Typical european architecture is far better. Still I'd like to see more of Motor City, belive it's interesting. This morning I read an article about Detroit's downtown, new casinos and hotels in polish newspaper - perhaps some photos of them??
