HMR pact with IIT Delhi for study on pedestrian facilities ![]() Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd. (HMR) entered into an agreement with IIT Delhi on Saturday, for the latter to study integration of different modes of transport and provision of pedestrian facilities, cycling and other Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) facilities, etc. at the metro rail stations. This is to facilitate “seamless travel facility” for metro rail commuters in the twin cities. The feasibility study costing Rs.19 lakh was sanctioned by the Union Government under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Scheme (JNNURM) to make the project stand out in the country as well as to facilitate redesigning the capital as an eco-friendly city with less carbon emissions, said HMR Managing Director N.V.S. Reddy. REPORT IN 5 MONTHS The report will be prepared within five months and based on its assessment, further Central financial assistance will be sought for provision of these facilities, he said. As part of the study, IIT Delhi will identify inter-change points of different modes of transport, pedestrian access facilities within half-a- kilometre to one-kilometre distance from the metro rail stations; cycling and other NMT access requirements within there kilometres from the metro stations. ACCESS FACILITIES Access facilities for transfer of passengers from bus stops; MMTS stations and railway terminals to and from metro rail stations will be identified. The study will also provide the basis for running of dedicated feeder bus services (‘merry go-round services’) in the metro rail catchment areas, i.e. the colonies and activity areas around metro rail stations. Based on the expected passenger loads at each metro station, IIT Delhi will suggest pedestrian access facilities to metro rail stations, provision of footpaths and bicycle tracks, parking facilities for cars and two wheelers at and near metro stations and sky-walks below the metro rail viaduct. WORKS IN FULL SWING Sky-walks on the lines of the ones in Bangkok will give direct access and landing into the nearby office and shopping complexes, malls, school buildings, multiplexes, etc., apart from facilitating safe crossing of junctions. The MD also stated that stage-I metro rail works between Nagole and Mettuguda were going on in full swing and so far 57 pier (pillar) foundations have been excavated and 50 foundations and 20 piers have been completed. |

‘The Hyderabad music scene is picking up’
![]() City-based band ‘Fatman Trio’ is all set to perform at Cuba Libre on June 27 With a name that reflects upon the band’s sense of humour, The Fatman Trio, are all set to go places. These Hyderabadi boys who have been playing for over a year as a band are quite happy with the music scene and are optimistic about it picking up. Aradhya Alamuru, guitarist says, “The idea began a year ago when my bassist and I were playing without a drummer. Our search for a drummer ended nine months after our impromptu jam sessions.” Ask about the band’s name and Aradhya jokingly reflects, “We were supposed to be playing at a competition somewhere and we couldn’t come up with a name. A friend of ours, while trying to humour us, called us The Fatman Trio and we’ve been a band ever since.” The trio is a blues rock band with jazz influences. Apart from Aradhya, the band consists of Krishna Chaitanya on the bass guitars and Joshua on the drums, the band has performed over 20 shows, including a couple of acoustic sets. “The scene in Hyderabad is picking up thanks to the many initiatives of Cuba Libre or XSB these days. But we wish we do not have to procrastinate over that long dry period between two shows,” they say. While the band’s forte is primarily blues rock, they also innovate with old blues songs arranged and presented with a refreshing three piece band framework. Hop into Cuba Libre to listen to them playing on June 27. Some of the best blues rock artists will come alive, from the Cream to Hendrix, added with the band’s very own sense of humour and style, keeping alive the rock tradition in Hyderabad. |

Is the industrial environment healthy in A.P.?
http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper...cle3592978.ece It is time Andhra Pradesh gets itself on the fast track of development so as to attract global and local investors.FILE PHOTO: NAGARA GOPAL Two recent announcements by the government have puzzled industrialists in Andhra Pradesh and investors looking for new ventures to park their funds. One was in May declaring that a Abu Dhabi government-owned company would establish a petroleum refinery at a cost of US $ 6 billion in the Petroleum, Chemical and Petrochemical Industrial Region (PCPIR) in Visakhapatnam. The second was in June when the government announced clearance by the State Investment Promotion Board of 25 mega industrial projects with a whopping Rs. 40,379 crore investment. Had the industrial environment, on a downswing after the Telangana agitation and the political uncertainty, suddenly changed for the better? It was only in January this year, memoranda of understanding for investments worth Rs. 6.47 lakh crore were signed during the CII’s Partnership Summit. Did all this mean Andhra Pradesh had become the most favoured destinations for global and local investors? A reality check becomes necessary to verify these postulations. Among other parameters, a healthy industrial environment would mean easy availability of power, water and land besides swift government clearances. For the last three months, a power holiday has been declared due to shortfall in supply. On June 30, power utilities could supply 216 million units (mu) as against the requirement of 252 mu. Even water-related issues have become thorny with India Cements Managing Director summoned twice by the CBI for questioning over allegations that rules were bent for supplying water to his cement units. The government has cancelled agreements with Brahmani Steels and Rakshana Steels while Royal Enfield preferred Tamil Nadu to Andhra Pradesh for its expansion plans. It’s hardly the stuff that can attract investors. Murky controversies have engulfed allotment of land for industries. A former Minister, Mopidevi Venkataramana, is in jail over the Vanpic issue while five other Ministers have been served notices by the Supreme Court over allegations that their departments tweaked formal decisions taken by the Cabinet. The list of IAS officers and industrialists placed in the dock by the CBI on issues relating to land allotment, mining leases and the government’s equity in joint ventures reads like a who’s who of Andhra Pradesh. “After all this ruckus, no IAS officer is ready to stick his neck out and make the going easier for investors,” a retired bureaucrat said. In fact, even the Cabinet is treading warily and is trying to put into place a new land allotment policy. At its recent meeting, it could take no decision on the draft policy as Ministers wanted a fool-proof system which prohibited anyone from tampering with a decision once it was approved by the Cabinet. Manufacturing sector A leading city businessman said the State required investments in the manufacturing sector but not many industrialists would be eager to put their money there, given the present situation. “Investing money in real estate, liquor business and in contracts is an easy way of making money. Setting up a manufacturing plant requires hard work, investment, technology and ability to stand up to competition,” he said. Former CII president Y. Harishchandra Prasad was asked whether the upcoming investments were a sign of a good industrial climate. He said, “It is not all about mega projects. The small and medium units are suffering due to erratic power supply. They are unable to meet their production targets and resorting to layoffs.” Mr. Prasad said the State’s GDP can go up only if the manufacturing sector flourishes, which it is not. Andhra Pradesh must get itself on the fast track of development as its GDP has fallen from 8.9 per cent to the sub-six level. It must at least keep pace with the national GDP which is projected in the 5.8-6.5 band by the rating agencies for the 2012-13 fiscal. Precarious power situation, row over water, murky controversies over land allotments and much more is hardly the stuff that can attract investors |

Research unit for Zebrafish launched at Hyderabad
HYDERABAD, JULY 2: An exclusive research facility for Zebrafish has been set up at the city-based Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB). The lab has been doing research on Zebrafish. The facility will be laboratory for research on this alternative animal model. It was inaugurated on Monday by Prof. Samir K. Brahmachari, Director-General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. Zebrafish, a native of Indian subcontinent, has gained prominence as a model organism as it provides access to various genetic, genomic and biology information with distinct advantages in the vertebrate systems. Speaking on this occasion, Dr Ch Mohan Rao, Director, CCMB said the genome of Zebrafish is similar to the genome of human beings. This has prompted the lab to deal exclusively with this fish to investigate developmental biology in vertebrates. It is an important model to study human diseases. |
