Heading west brings us into the hood known as Charleston. It is everything that is between the West Shore Expwy (NY 440) and the Arthur Kill. This hood is mostly residential. Originally it was first settled in the 1700's and was known as Androvetteville, which was mostly farmland at that time. In 1854, the name was changed to Kriescherville after Balthasar Kreischer. Just like Henry Steinway, Kreischer also had the idea to develope a new town that would consist of other things besides the factory that he was known for. In 1877, his factory burnned down a fire, but it was rebuilt after. In 1927, the name was changed again to Charleston, after Charles Kreischer to remove German names from NYC after fighting against Germany in WWI. In 1928, it was connected to NJ by the Outerbridge Crossing. Major developement came here as it did in the rest of this part of Staten Island durring the 1960's. In 1976, the West Shore Expwy cut off Charleston from the rest of its neighbors. Despite the name change, there are still a lot of German remmants that can be found here such as bars with beer gardens. You can get here by taking the S55, S74, and S84 buses. Here is what you will find in Charelston.
