TOOLED AESTHETIC. The concept for a tooled frame with a machined veneer was commensurate with PROTON’s aspirations as a regional leader in automobile design and manufacturing : a metal hangar of corporate technology. As in the research and design building, the skin of this main building extension was detailed to the degree of modulated sunlight desired for the various spaces within.

ROLLING PLAINS. An engineering proposal for the scheme had earlier been commissioned. However, the search was still on for an architectural image for the port. Located on a mangrove plain where water edged land, the concept began as a thread of continuity to knit the disparate seven masses of the port facilities. The concept of ocean and shipping, the canted prow of a ship as it cuts through water, cantilevered steel gantries and the rollers of an undulating sea: it was felt that over the flat expanse of land, massing and silhouette were vital in informing the image of the port.

The port structures were conceived with canted and louvered steel ribbons for controlled heat gain and direct sun-shading: a sheltering skin from the heat of an equatorial sun. The Port of Tanjung Pelepas was fast-tracked and completed in twelve months. The constraints of time resulted in a design and construction process fueled by a high degree of control and coordination between client, consultant, contractor and fabricator. The language of steel generally used through the project and the port administration complex in particular, had to be detailed to the dimensions of bolt connections and steel interfacing with other materials, an attempt to balance the ideas of symbol, climate, space requirement and maritime.

The UEM academy was conceived in response to the client's desire to adapt an existing workshop into a Centre of Excellence consisting of an IBS Training Centre and Academy, displaying innovative use of Industrialised Building Systems able to meet a tight construction schedule.

The building was designed to allow flexibility and adaptability of programmes in meeting the needs of the present without compromising the future. It is an attempt to create an aesthetic of heterogeneous forms working as a cohesive whole. The design points to how diversity and differences may coexist in the urban culture of today.
