I think downtown Tacoma would look much better if they get rid of this huge highway that divided downtown area.

Why did they build I-705 anyway? I understand that I-705 is needed to help funnel traffic from the Port of Tacoma/SR 509, but why do they need the rest? There's barely any traffic there (as far as I can tell), and it just seperates inland downtown with the waterfront, though developers have done a nice job adapting with the freeway (Bridge of Glass).

^ Not sure why either. But its very handy if you need to get to University Place. What I don't understand is hwy 7 that goes nowhere. They need to finish that one for sure.

Not going to happen:

As you can see from the Google Maps image, SR 7 ends at 38th Street, but a long time ago the freeway was destined to be extened south along the railway, but I don't know what happened.

Tacoma has tremendous potential...I like Tacoma alot.....My firm is looking at a number of large scale construction deals in downtown Tacoma right now.....during off traffic hours, I can make it down to Tacoma in 30 minutes from downtown Seattle.....get down there and see for yourself.....

Tacoma does get the respect it deserves from Seattle/Bellevue.....

....

how large of scale, like more 8-10 story stuff or some actual height? either way more density is awesome. i love the smaller blocks narrower streets also the randomness of the streets. gives it a lot of character and keeps traffic from roaring by like it can in downtown seattle. when that city gets dense it will be insane to drive in though. i really wanna find more info on the downtown streetcar plan. somethin like 30 miles of rail to connect all the downtown neighborhoods

I'll actually comment on your pictures, something no one does to me.
Yes, they are very good. Have not been to Tacoma in a bit. Sure they are a little blurry, but you still get the idea. Have fun with the new camera!

Be sure to check my pictures on the first page.

North would put them on the other shore of the Foss Waterway. You might mean east.

I gotta say, you pictures are really hurting my eyes. Try the nightime or moving settings on your camera (assuming your camera is like my camera).

"Tacoma does get the respect it deserves from Seattle/Bellevue....."

As a person who moved here from out of state 4 years ago to DT Bellevue, all I hear about Tacoma is all the shootings in the news. Clean that place up and it will be fine.

Affordable housing is not worth getting shot! In contrast the FBI says Bellevue is the safest larger city in the state per capita.

You must be a TV news watcher. If that's true, OF COURSE you hear about crime. That's the majority of what they cover about any place, along with weather, puppies, and other worthless shit.

Tacoma's not perfect, but it's way better than its reputation. The Hilltop area was pretty bad in the 90s (by Northwest standards), but crime there had fallen by half last I heard. Otherwise, the city has its low rent districts, with all that entails, but its crime rate is normal.

Did I mention, last time I was in downtown Tacoma walking around taking pictures, I heard gun shots? I was wondering what the heck, and I looked at the peopel around me, they kept walking around like no big deal. ;D Remember, I'm a teenager, never heard gun shots really that close to me in a city before. It came from a parking garage, or so it sounded like that. I'm sure the shot sound carries.

Well, by driving through Tacoma a couple of times (to avoid the bottleneck on I-5), suburban Tacoma is REALLY ghetto. The area I drove through was 38th Street, and it looked really run-down and EMPTY. What does the city do with it's money? Man....
