Given that there's no university there, I've been wondering for years if they were ever gonna change it!

Now all they need is an urban beach and they're set.

I'm curious as to whether people ever use the huge grassy circle in that park... But at least a wave pool is a good anchor to get people to go there.

That sort of thing looks better in a drawing than it does on the ground....sort of like the curvy grids people do with new urbanist developments.
But people will toss a ball there. I do wonder if there are benches in the shade. Nothing worse than wandering around a park and all the shady benches are taken because the designers don't get that not everybody wants to be in the sun. Sometimes, they're ALL in the sun. |

I see there isn't a lot of parking on the site. That seems a little short-sighted what with wave pool season right around the corner.

Thanks for the info. Great to bring more people to downtown. Hopefully this can spur other business and residential growth.

Hotels tend to support restaurants way more than the same number of residential units would. Same with retail if a good district exists. And they should be a good audience for the museum district. Good all around.
This the UW area has a way to go to fill in, even along Pacific, but the mix is good -- students, visitors, residents, conventeers, office workers, museum-goers, etc., all fill out the week pretty well. |

A Tacoma seafood sales company, long a fixture on the Thea Foss Waterway, would remain on its present site and remodel its building if the City Council backs a property sale approved this week by the Foss Waterway Development Authority. Johnny’s Seafood Co., now part of the nation’s largest seafood company, Pacific Seafood, had once considered moving from its 1199 Dock Street site to a strip mall in Fife, but now it says it will undertake an extensive remodeling of the building it has occupied since 1975. I hope it's approved. Great news to keep a density of jobs in/near downtown.

DuPont may soon be home to new Amazon distribution center
DuPont may soon be home to new Amazon distribution center
Online shopping giant Amazon looks to be planning a second distribution center in Pierce County. A national real estate company associated with the mega-retailer bought 92 acres in DuPont for $26.1 million. The site, next door to Intel, is more than raw dirt. It includes plans for a center that is “permit-ready,” the seller said, so it could be built and open in 10 months. Details about the deal, first reported by the Puget Sound Business Journal, are scarce. Indianapolis-based Duke Realty bought the land in late November. It works with Amazon across the country. Just a few years ago, a company vice president told an industry publication that Amazon was No. 2 in Duke’s portfolio. Read more here: http://www.thenewstribune.com/2012/1...#storylink=cpy |

Parcel off Foss Waterway among possible sites for new distillery
A startup company with ambitions of creating a line of premium spirits for national distribution is eyeing a parcel on the near-downtown waterway’s east side as the site for a new distillery and restaurant. Riverhorse Inc. said this week that the site on East D Street, adjacent to Tacoma’s old waterfront fire station north of the Murray Morgan Bridge, is among the finalists in a competition to become the home of the new facility, to be called Copper & Kings Distillery. The company, now based in Minneapolis, is looking at other sites in Oregon, Kentucky and Virginia. |
