Just think of all of the historic buildings they torn down to build that thing.

There is even a larger garage that looks the same a few blocks north on Pacific Ave. The city wants to tear that one down and have a large project put in its place.

Good idea. That northern garage is blight, right where there should be major activity.

Great pictures on what looks to be a great day!

In the first shot on this post that shows what used to be of retail downtown. I believe there are 3 former department stores in that shot. Woolworths, People's, and Rhodes.

I really like the ones you took of Downtown Tacoma from far away (L Street overpass?).
I don't know about other people but I like the skyline shots with with downtown in the background and industrial in the front. Another great shot like that is from 25th and Jefferson Ave.

Next trip you should venture more into the St. Helens Neighborhood and Stadium District. There is a lot going on there.

Here is the sketch for the Elk property in Downtown Tacoma. William & Dame of Portland bought it in I believe 2006. They wanted to build a tower next to the Elks building but couldn't figure out what to do with the actual Elks building. With the RE market getting tuff they decided to put the property on the market..

TNT Bizz Buzz Entry

For Sale Flyer

Here is a sketch of what the high-rise might have looked like:

Pic from Exit133.com

Some in the community are pushing for the Children's Museum of Tacoma to buy the property for a new location. I do like the idea but I would have liked to see a high-rise go in the vacant lot next door.

Tacoma is looking great! Jacob, I believe it is spelled R-h-o-d-e-s. It was before my time, but I always liked to think that it was named for our state flower, the Coast Rhododendron, but like most department stores, it is the family's namesake. UPS occupies the space still, no?

The state owns the Rhodes Center now. I belive UPS used to have their law school there but they sold that to SU or SPU years ago. Tacoma Housing Authority wants to buy the building for their offices and possible "worker housing". We love our social services down here

Its good to know our taxpayer dollars and low income families rents are going to a great cause. lol

I was beginning to worry if anyone would ever comment. Thank you JacobR. My full Tacoma Update can be found at my site, if you have not seen it already. It's linked on the small image that says Tacoma on it.

Nice to have a local Tacoma citizen to keep us up to date, thank you.

LeMay: America's Car Museum

The TNT had an article in todays paper updating us on the LeMay Musesum.

Looks like construction should start soon:

Hold your horsepower – for one more month. The board of the Harold E. LeMay Museum will likely vote May 2 to break ground on Phase 1 of a $100 million campus near the Tacoma Dome.

Today, three contractors who bid for the job have been selected to compete for final selection. The museum board will meet in Detroit on May 2, and along with selecting a final contractor, members will be asked to vote on a date to break ground on what now is a parking lot of the Tacoma Dome.

The end of the wait – and thus the real beginning of the museum – is nearer than ever before.

New Building Information: Click Here

Phase II Building:

pic from LeMayMuseum.org

Phase I:

Madeira says that when complete, the Phase 1 building will in itself be the world’s largest car museum.

LeMay architect Alan Grant says the 190,000-square-foot building – 400 feet long, 45 feet high and 80 feet wide on two levels – will contain a formal display area for 100 cars; a cafe; a banquet facility; two large club rooms; storage for 600 museum-owned vehicles (which will be on view to the public); 80 private storage bays paid for by collectors; classrooms; a research library and administration area; a boardroom; and a retail shop, all tied to the 3.5-acre show field where clubs and collectors can gather to share their automobile romances.

The museum should be good for Tacoma, though it's possibly the least interesting topic on earth to me.

A car museum would be awesome! I'd love to visit that. I'll get tickets as soon as they approve of that! Go for it Tacoma! Start a new image, and follow it. It would be great.

What a handsome structure. If they ever have an exhibit with a focus on Volvos, I'm there.
