CONSTANTA`s ports & shipyards - news
PORT OF CONSTANTZA : A World Class Maritime Port
http://www.osce.org/documents/eea/2007/09/26163_en.pdf ![]() PORT OF CONSTANTA - Eastern Gateway of Europe. The Port of Constanza is situated on the western coast of the Black Sea, at 179 nM from the Bosphorus Strait and 85 nM from the Sulina Branch through which the Danube flows into the sea. It covers 3,926 ha of which 1,312 ha is land and the rest of 2,614 ha is water. Completion works on the southern side have already started to host new terminals in a favoured zone with high water depth. The two breakwaters located northwards and southwards shelter the port creating the safest conditions for port activities. The present length of the North breakwater is 8,344 m and the South breakwater is 5,560 m. With a total quay length of 29.83 km, the Port of Constantza has a present number of 145 berths, of which 119 are operational berths with depths between 2 and 19 meters. Such water basins being the deepest in the Black Sea allow the accommodation of tankers and bulk carriers of 220,000 DWT. Located at the cross-roads of the trade routes linking the developed countries of Western Europe and the emerging markets of Central Europe with the suppliers of raw materials from the CIS, Central Asia and Transcaucasus, the Port of Constantza is the main Romanian port and the largest port in the Black Sea. It has a geo strategically position being located on the route of two Pan-European Transport Corridors: river Corridor VII (Danube) and rail-road Corridor IV. In the southern part of Constantza Port there is a river-maritime sector, which allows the accommodation of maritime vessels and river vessels as well. The two satellite ports Midia and Mangalia are located close to the port of Constantza and perform a vital function in the overall port framework. The Port of Constantza offers a lot of advantages, among which, the most important are: - multi-purpose port with modern facilities and sufficient depth to accommodate the largest vessels passing through the Suez Canal; - direct access to the Pan-European Corridor VII, through the Danube Black Sea Canal, providing a shorter and cheaper waterway transport towards Central Europe than the routes using the Northern Europe ports; - good connections with all modes of transport: railway, road, river, airway and pipelines; - the New Container Terminal on Pier II South, increasing the container operating capacity; - future expansion planned; - Ro-Ro and Ferry-boat terminals suitable for the development of short sea shipping serving the Black Sea and the Danube riparian countries; - New status of Port of Constantza, "port with customs facilities"; - Future expansion planned. The network of motorways, railways, waterways and pipelines turn the port of Constantza into the ideal multimodal transport center for any type of cargo bound for various destinations. Millions of tons of cargo moving annually through Constantza are carried from or to hinterland markets and end-consumers. Fast, reliable and efficient transportation of goods is rendered at European standards on the eastward-westward commercial 20 axis. Port infrastructure is connected to the Pan-European Transport Corridors defined at the Pan-European Transport Conference in Helsinki in 1997 and supported by the EU: river Corridor no. VII and railroad Corridor no. IV as well as the "TRACECA" Corridor. ![]() ![]() MARITIME PORT The Port of Constantza is located on the Western coast of the Black Sea, at 179 nM from the Bosphorus Strait and 85 nM from the Sulina Branch, through which the Danube flows into the sea. It covers 3,926 ha of which 1,313 ha is land and the rest of 2,613 ha is water. The two breakwaters located northwards and southwards shelter the port creating the safest conditions for port activities. The present length of the North breakwater is 8,344 m and the South breakwater is 5,560 m. Constantza Port has a handling capacity of 100 million tons per year and 156 berths, of which 140 berths are operational. The total quay length is 29.83 km, and the depths range between 8 and 19 meters. These characteristics are comparable with those offered by the most important European and international ports, allowing the accommodation of tankers with capacity of 165,000 dwt and bulkcarriers of 220,000 dwt. Currently, there are several projects in progress, in order to build new facilities for cargo handling and to improve the transport connections between Constantza Port and its hinterland. These projects are mainly located in the South part of the port. ![]() RIVER PORT Constantza Port is both a maritime and a river port. Daily, more than 200 river vessels are in the port for cargo loading or unloading or waiting to be operated. Facilities offered by the port allow accommodation of any type of river vessel. The connection of the port with the Danube river is made through the Danube-Black Sea Canal, which represents one of the main strengths of Constantza Port. Due to low costs and important cargo volumes that can be carried, the Danube is one of the most advantageous modes of transport, an efficient alternative to the European rail and road congested transport. Important cargo quantities are carried by river, between Constantza and Central and Eastern European countries: Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Austria, Slovakia and Germany. River traffic is very important for Constantza Port, having a share of 23.3% of the total traffic in 2005, when 8,800 river vessels have called to the port. In order to cope with the future growth of river traffic, which is foreseen to register 17 million tons/year up to 2010, Maritime Ports Administration SA Constantza has started a new investment for a Barge Terminal. Such investment will improve the sailing conditions and develop facilities for the accommodation of river vessels in the South part of the port. ![]() TOURISTIC PORT Tomis marina is integrated in a harmonious manner with the architectural design of Constantza city and it represents a prolongation of the Casino cliff and a balanced transition to the city beach. Access from the city to the port can be easily made by vehicles and on foot. A series of touristical objectives of great interest can be found close to the Tomis marina: the Ovidiu Square bearing the name of the Roman poet Ovid, the Archaeological Museum, the Roman Mosaic with ancient relics of old Tomis, the Aquarium, the Genovese Lighthouse, the Casino. Due to its favourable location and present infrastructure, Tomis marina has a high potential for nautical tourism, sporting activities and entertainment, representing a shelter for sport sailships. The capacity of the port allows the arrangement of sporting activities such as boat races. The potential of Tomis marina and the organizational skills of N.C. M.P.A. S.A. Constantza were proven during July 1999 when Kayra boat race took place. The boat race had a route of 2000 nautical miles for 58 days, with calls at 30 ports in 6 countries, Tomis marina included. For a period of 6 days Tomis marina hosted 40 boats having lengths between 9 and 20 meters and representing 14 countries. IAt present N.C. M.P.A. S.A. Constantza is developing an investment project regarding the modernisation of Tomis marina, having in view the rehabilitation and extension of the breakwaters to create a safer port and also increase its functionality and services. Tomis marina is to become an important destination for coastal pleasure boats sailing along the Romanian sea shore with calls at Eforie, Costinesti, Neptun, Mangalia or northwards Mamaia and Midia. Nautical tourism could become international by including Tomis marina in a Black Sea tour, for example Istanbul - Varna - Constanta - Odessa - Yalta which can be performed through coastal navigation. This route might be extended by including other ports on the Black Sea (Varna, Odessa), and also the Danube Delta. ![]() Satelitte ports : PORT OF MIDIA The Port of Midia is located on the Black Sea coastline, approx 13.5nm N of Constantza. It is one of the satellite ports of Constantza and was designed and built to serve the adjacent industrial and petrochemical facilities. The N and S breakwaters have a total length of 6,97 m. The port covers 833,9 ha of which 233,7 ha is land and 600,1 ha is water. There are 14 berths (11 operational berths, 3 berths belong to Constantza Shipyard) with a total length of 2,24 km. Further to dredging operations performed the port depths are increased to 9 m at crude oil discharging berths 1-4, allowing access to tankers having a 8,5 m maximum draught and 20.000 dwt. Connections : road, railway, inland ( via Poarta Alba-Midia Navodari Canal) Barges: There is a river-maritime access in the port via Danube-Black Sea Canal (Poarta Alba - Navodari branch). ![]() Satellite ports : PORT OF MANGALIA The Port of Mangalia is situated on the Black Sea, close to the Southern border with Bulgaria, and over 260 km N of Istanbul. It has an area of 142.19 ha of which 27.47 ha is land and 114.72 ha is water. ![]() Quote:

PORT OF CONSTANTA - 1bn Euro in Expansion & Development
You have here a nice .pdf file presenting the investments in the expansion and development of Constanta`s main port. The Master Plan for the Port of Constanta was realized by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The most part of the money comes from EU (the port being one of EU`s priorities for the european infrastructure) or from private sorces (see for instance Dubai World http://www.csct.ro/ ). http://bluebox.bohmann.at/22/downloa...nload_3167.pdf Yesterday, EU announced that Romania has 4 projects (from a total of 30) on the EU`s prioritary projects list for infrastructure : 1. Port of Constanta 1. Bucharest - Constanta highway 2. Curtici - Constanta railway 4. Navigation projects on Danube Consequently, the next 6 years (2007-2013) Romania will receive 4.6 bn Euro for some infrastructure projects related to Constanta's ports activity. http://www.standard.ro/articol_14069...a_romania.html {romanian)

DAEWOO MANGALIA secured US$1.92 billion worth of orders so far this year
![]() http://seanews.info/news/news.asp?newsID=54165, http://english.chosun.com/w21data/ht...710230021.html, http://standard.ro/articol_15819/san...de_dolari.html Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering has announced another monster order for nine boxships at its Romanian facility. An European owner has penned the firm order for the 5,500-teu vessels at Daewoo Mangalia Heavy Industries for a total spend of $855m, the yard group said on Monday.According to TradeWinds, Daewoo Mangalia president and chief executive Lee Jae-Bong would not reveal the identity of the owner citing confidentiality clauses in the contract, but said all would be revealed in a week’s time. He added that the owner is a first time customer of Daewoo Mangalia. So far this year Daewoo Mangalia has secured a record US$1.92 billion worth of orders for 21 ships, topping the $1 billion mark for the first time in its history. In 1997, when the company was set up, Daewoo Mangalia won $3 million worth of orders. In 2001 it won more than $100 million, and this years its orders are up to 640 times what it achieved at its start. A night view of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering's construction yard. ![]() Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering said, " Combining orders of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering and the Romanian joint venture, the value of all contracts amount to $16.4 billion, or 97 percent of this year's target of $1.7 billion, which we upgraded in July. If the trend keeps up, the shipbuilding companies are together likely to exceed the upgraded target.

![]() + EU funds to drive Romania's Constanta port growth at 15-20pc a year (7 March 2007) http://www.aries-shipping.ro/shippin...a-port-growth- SHIPPING interests see cargo volumes at the Black Sea port of Constanta rising 15-20 per cent a year, as consumer wealth generated by widening European Union membership draws higher volumes of Asian cargoes into Romania and its hinterlands. With Romania in the EU, an influx of European funds is expected to rapidly enhance road and rail links, resulting in an increase in private and public investments to reach EUR220 million (US$289 million) over two to three years. Much growth is expected to centre at the DP World container terminal that already handles 870,000 TEU a year, and stands as the largest such facility on the Black Sea, reported the London Financial Times. DP World Constanta terminal manager Rowan Bullock expects traffic to increase 15-20 per cent a year for at least three years as wealth flows to Europe's eastern regions enabling its population to buy more goods from Asia. Significant Investment by DP World continues at Constanta
http://www.csct.ro/main_pages.php?id=36 Constanta, 15 November 2007: In response to the continued success of its Constanta operation DP World has committed to further expenditure for acquisition of major equipment and a significant expansion of stacking space at the Romanian facility. Mohammed Sharaf, CEO of DP World comments, ‘The investment at Constanta is part of the company’s drive to establish world class infrastructure for the region and reflects ongoing demand from customers for more capacity at DP World’s Black Sea terminal.’ Constanta port ranked 7th globally in terms of volume growth in percentage terms for 2006 and this growth is being repeated at the DP World facility in 2007. Terminal management recently concluded a comprehensive Masterplan process which sees the development of the facility through to 2021. The expenditure represents the quay crane, yard gantry cranes and civil works associated with the first two phases of the development. The investment will increase the quay line by 520 metres providing 1500 metres overall, add 3 super post-panamax cranes and equip the facility with sufficient ancillary equipment and yard space to handle 1.7 million TEU. Constantin Matei, General Manager for Maritime Ports Administration, acknowledges the expansion, ‘DP World has made significant investment since acquiring the Constanta facility and I am confident this investment is well justified given the continued growth in the region.’ Works will commence immediately with additional stacking space coming on line progressively in 2008 and the additional quay line and quay cranes in early 2009. The terminal expects to have an additional 3500 ground slots operational within 12 months. Since opening in 2004 the DP World facility has quickly grown to become the undisputed Black Sea hub with continued growth in the region supporting the investment commitment in the port. Patrick Walters, DP World Regional Director, Europe and North Africa, is upbeat about the prospects for the Constanta terminal saying “Constanta is well placed to capitalise on the geographical and infrastructural advantages that will see the Port extend its catchment area into Eastern Europe. Whilst road and rail links continue to improve, an increasing focus on using the Danube will provide an environmentally sustainable alternative in the transport mix.”

DP World Constanta on ambitious expansion drive
http://archive.gulfnews.com/articles.../10150567.html Constanta Building on steady growth over the past three years, DP World Constanta South Container Terminal in Romania is pursuing an ambitious expansion drive in the near future. "We are in the process of finalising further expansion of the facilities at the Constanta port," said Sorin Petrec, technical manager at DP World Constanta. "We took over an empty port facility just three years back, and today we have made such huge strides that it is necessary that we expand and attend to the growing demand in this region," Petrec added. Profitable deal DP International signed an agreement to handle the Constanta container facility at the end of 2003. Actual operations commenced only in April 2004, and the largest port serving the Black Sea region has shown a steady handling growth since then. "We acquired six empty terminals then, and today we do not have sufficient place to handle the containers coming in to the port," Petrec stated. From handling a modest 100,000 containers in its first year in 2004, the Constanta facility improved to 580,000 containers in 2005. Last year, the port handled 870,000 containers and this year they have set a new record of 1.2 million containers. A Swedish financial regulator denied a newspaper report it had sent information to the country's economic crimes unit connected with trading related to Borse Dubai's takeover offer for Nordic exchanges owner OMX. "Business has grown by leaps and bounds since 2004 and we have to plan for the immediate future. The only way forward is to expand," Petrec said. A substantial part of the first phase of expansion was undertaken last year providing additional storage TEU capacity and adding new operating equipment. "This year we are in the final stages of acquiring an additional 25 hectares of land and putting up an additional kilometre of key line. A decision should be taken by the end of this year," Petrec stated. "The plan is to have an additional eight RTGs and at least ten more hectares of new platforms as part of the next phase of expansion," Petrec said. "The plan is to expand and keep up with the times. And at the moment, we are in such a strong position that we have no other choice but to expand and cater to the growing demand for container handling in this region," Petrec added. Most of the business to the facility comes from the Far East serving the Black Sea region of Europe predominantly Russia, Ukraine, Georgia and Bulgaria. DP World Constanta hosted drivers and officials of the Dubai-based Victory Class One Powerboat Team. Victory is competing in the Romanian Grand Prix - the fourth round on the 2007 WPPA World Class One Powerboat Championship being held here this weekend.

DP World Constanta growth
![]() http://www.ameinfo.com/130417.html DP World has seen steady year-on-year growth at its Constanta terminal in Romania, reported Gulf News. The firm took over the facility in late 2003 and handled 100,000 containers in 2004, while last year it dealt with 870,000 containers and it should reach 1.2m this year. Revised Asia-Europe network
http://www.maerskline.com/link/?page...europe/romania The new AE3 service will commence on April 3, 2007, with Maersk Derby sailing out of Qingdao, China. This new product will assist further development in the high growth areas in Black Sea and provide direct access to markets so far served via Transshipment. Among the advantages of new product are: - Improved schedule reliability as a result of exclusion of transshipment ports Gioia Tauro and Port Said; - Significant reduction of transit time to Constanta and Ilyichevsk from ports of South East Asia, Japan and some ports of China, as well as to Constanta from North China and Korea.

New sea line Far East - Constanta Port
http://www.bohmann.at/templates/inde...Constanta_Port The first ship of the China Shipping Container Lines company to inaugurate the direct line for container ships Asia-Black Sea Express is to enter the Constanta Port on Thursday morning. General manager of the China Shipping Romania Agency Catalin Petre told Rompres that the container ship Xin Shan Tou entered the harbour of Constanta on Wednesday morning, after an experimental road of 27 days, but with the road to last in fact between 21 and 25 days on the Shanghai-Constanta route. 'The Asia-Black Sea Express route is used by 7 ships, each with a capacity of 4,250 TEU. All the 7 ships are newly built between 2005 and 2006 by CSCl, which is part of the China Shipping Group and which is the 6th world operator in terms of volume and share market on the container ship segment,' Catalin Petre said. The new transport service to link the Far East with the Black Sea is to be used on a weekly basis and it became operational on September 13. Another good presentation of the Port of Constanta :

Constanta Port – in Top 10 busiest ports in terms of cargo traffic
6 July 2007, http://www.aries-shipping.ro/shippin...-cargo-traffic According to the statistics of Rotterdam Port Authorities in Holland, Constanta Port is number 9 in Europe in relation to cargo traffic, with 57.1 millions tones representing the maritime traffic transactions registered in 2006. Rotterdam Port, number 1 in Europe for maritime traffic, was 378.2 millions tones . The following positions on the chart are held by Antwerp (167,4 millions tons), Hamburg (134,8 millions tons), Marsilia (100 millions tons) and Amsterdam (84,3). According to the Romanian Port Authority, there has been a significant increase in the traffic of containers in the year 2006, however, Constanta Port was not on the chart of European Ports which names the best fourteen ports in Europe. ![]() Nevertheless, the Romanian traffic of containers is increasing rapidly, and soon it will surpass Piraeus Port traffic of containers, which registered in 2006 at 1,386 million TEU. ![]() * Our goal is be in top 5 bussiest european ports as soon as possible (in 2-3 years ?!?)
