Not all, not even most. Only five cities in the world currently have megatalls, three of them megatall buildings, two megatall towers. Of those five, only ONE - Dubai - has a megatall to boast. Three others - Tokyo, Shanghai, Guangzhou - have been global business centers long before NYC even existed or the continent it's on settled by anything other than hunter-gatherers. The last - Mecca - has an attraction that calls over a billion people to visit at least once in their lifetime, if there's a megatall next to it or not - people don't even care about that one when they visit. So basically, you're saying that 20% (one fifth) is "most or all". Your math is pretty damn bad.

I like this building. New York is truly lacking in supertalls.
Right... and Bill Gates is broke.

NYC has more supertalls than any city except Dubai and maybe one or two in China, but even that is likely to change within the next 5 years. The development in NY right now is insane.

It has eight completed supertalls right now, and will have at least 22 supertalls in 3.5 - 4 years. The next 5 years could even bring it close to 30. And by that time, supertall height might be a common thing in NYC. The only thing that NYC lacks is a serious megatall proposal.

Before the FAA said they don't want anything tall, I had faint hopes of a very tall tower around LIC because it's an emerging skyline with lots of room for development and for a signature tower to shine. But alas...

Still hoping for the outer boroughs or anything outside the dense Midtown and Downtown skylines, since for a megatall it's best to see it in its entirety, not just the top half.

Not gonna happen. There are actual neighborhoods between the two, and the two clusters are there because the bedrock is further below the surface in between.

I write "outside", you read "between", the words look that similar? There already are two supertalls in their early stages outside the two main skylines, one in the Lower East Side (247 Cherry Street), one in the Upper East Side (145 East 60th Street), they're quite established for projects that are "not gonna happen."

Also, the bedrock myth has been debunked a thousand times already, why do people still choose to believe in it? There isn't any bedrock anywhere near the surface of the vast majority of the world's tallest buildings, bedrock close to the surface is not in any way a requirement for a tall building and never has been. The two clusters are there because upper class people want to be with upper class people and not with the riff-raff.

up there, those who are saying there are cities that build to boast, remember, NY once built to boast too. there was a literal vertical war going on between various tallest buildings of that time. so there is nothing wrong in building to boast. they will only build to boast if they can, so take a break peeps!

New York would have to relocate all of its airports to get Megatalls ...

JFK, LaGuardia, Teterboro and Newark Airport are too close to the city for Megatalls to be safe ...

Megatall is only 53.8 meters taller than the tip of 1WTC.

From Fxfowle. Would be cool for a tower at the Hudson Yards to have a spire.

this is new to me, i'm intrigued. Is NYC in for another troll-spire? If its 240' it would be taller than 30 hudson yards... the rendering is recent, too, because it includes both 55 and 50 hudson yards.
that is on the architect's website, btw.

Really hoping that this spire doesnt happen. Sticking a massive spire on top of a large flat roof such as this just looks idiotic. This design looks much more graceful and well-thought without a giant stick on top. Getting sick of these scumbag developers screwing up designs in order to try and claim some trivial title.

"Hey look we have the tallest building in the Hudson Yards!"

It does look like a flag pole, doesn't it?

I really liked the design of the Hudson Spire before it became the Spiral. Reminded me of a more modern Sears Tower.

Looks like a design downgrade.

I think I like this new one more than the original

(But we haven't gotten confirmation yet as to whether this is actually a redesign)

They might have rotated the tower in that spired rendering... either way it still 'twists'
