Why? Because you've obviously never visited Stelvio.

Stelvio was really frightening, really narrow road with tight corners, tunnels without lights, vertical drop-offs. Our fully packed Renault Trafic barely made it to the top, the last corners in 1st gear(!) And then downhill, again very steep which caused the brakes to smell in a way you don't want to.
That pic above of me and my friends was taken after we conquered the pass ![]() The other side of the Pass, you can see the tunnels clearly in the upper right corner: Enough rock formations for you, Radi? |

I wonder if the road over that pass is as impressive and intimidating as the one over Stelvio. Btw, a nice site with many pics and info on almost all european passes is http://www.climbbybike.com/
![]() Col de l'Iseran ![]() Stelvio: ![]() Stelvio ranks 40th worldwide, col de l'Iseran 237th this is the nr 1, Scanuppia - Malga Palazzo ![]() ![]() Nice percentage ![]()

![]() "Der mit ihm" refers back to "Heldentod" and is a genitive. So it's "der Heldentod der mit ihm gefallenen". Get it? I hope so, as I can't explain it better. I'm a proficient German speaker, but by no means a teacher. But feel free to ask again.

^ But it says "den Heldentod" (accusative). And isn't it "der Kampfgenosse", so masculine? "Der" appears in genitive only by feminine and plural, not masculine. So then it should be "und des mit ihm"?

""Zur Erinnerung an den Heldentod (des Ingenieurs...) und an den Heldentod der (mit ihm) Gefallenen."
"Heldentod der Gefallenen" is a masculine genitive plural, regardless of the accusative of "den Heldentod". "Zur Erinnerung an" demands an accusative, but it does not interfere with the form after "Heldentod".

^ How on earth can it be plural, when Ferdinand I. is (was) just 1 man?

Nah 45% is about 24 degrees? I think some ramps in parking garages are this steep too.

Kaiser Ferdinand was not killed, not among "die Gefallenen". He dedicated this memorial to them.

^ Oh god, I wasn't even thinking! Yeah, he wasn't even emperor yet (and it's not like emperors fight usually anyway), although I kept reading it 1889 instead of 1809.
Thanks for clearing this up. Now also the grammar is ok.
