DOWNTOWN TORONTO

Four Seasons Hotel & Residences Toronto, located in the exclusive Yorkville District, will become the flagship property of the world's largest luxury hotel chain, Four Seasons Hotels Inc.

Two slender glass towers mark the southwest and northeast corners of the site, housing 253 hotel rooms and 202 Four Seasons-branded residential units. The penthouse unit will be the city's most expensive -- a $16 million unit.

The base of the southwest tower includes a restaurant and bar, with hotel rooms and residential suites above. An eight-storey extension at the north end of the building houses ballroom and conference facilities, a spa, health club and pool. The northeast tower is exclusively residential, with a restaurant at grade that faces onto a new 1,250 m2 landscaped public park.

News Excerpt From June 2007
Last month, two projects launched in Toronto -- the Four Seasons and the Shangri-la -- both of them connected to five-star hotels. Within four weeks, both of them were more or less half sold. "I thought it would take nine months to a year to get where we are now," says Hunter Milborne of Sotheby's International Realty, which is marketing the Four Seasons. At $1,200 to $1,400 per square foot for the non-penthouse units, the Four Seasons is setting a new gold standard. "What's amazing," adds Mr. Milborne, "it's the biggest, most expensive units that are selling fastest." [...]

Does anyone know if the global head offices are part of this project. Four Seasons is a Toronto firm, but I suspect that this is just their flagship hotel they are building.

Very interesting project. Where abouts in Downtown is this planned? Can someone go out and get pictures of the site where the tower is planned to be constructed?

It is being built just north of Bloor Street in Yorkville. If you are not familiar with Toronto, Bloor Street is about 25 blocks north of the CBD. The Uptown, which you commented on elsewhere, is located in the same area, but just south of Bloor Street. The area is also sometimes referred to as Bloor-Yorkville. Bloor is the premier high end shopping street in Toronto.

Sort of. As the city grew, what has been considered midtown has shifted ever further north away from the CBD and Lake Ontario. I consider Bloor-Yorkville to be mid-town Toronto, others consider mid-town to be much further north near St. Clair.

It depends who you ask, but I don't really consider anything further past Bloor-Yorkville to be part of the central city. There is downtown where the CBD is, and there is mid-town at Bloor-Yorkville. Pockets further north are too disconnected from the central city to be considered at all.

Over the next 30 years, St. Clair and Eglinton (even further north) may develop into more densified districts, but as of now, there isn't much reason to venture that far north. It isn't town at all, but rather suburb.

I'm wondering... if they're building a new Four Seasons hotel in Toronto, are they still going to keep the existing one?

I believe so, but I'm not that familiar with the details of this project. I have a feeling that this project will progress rather slowly. Other forumers comment that alot of construction here happens at a slower pace than in other places. I don't know if there is any truth to it, but weather and high construction standards/practices may point to that.

raymond_tung88:

Four Seasons has stated that they will keep both hotels, but that may simply be PR. Long term, I can't see this chain operating 2 properties 4 blocks from each other. The old one isn't very glamourous from the exterior. I doubt they'll be aggressively trying to hold on to it.

A little off topic, but what is the most luxurious hotel in Toronto right now? Where do all the celebs stay when they visit T.O. like at the TIFF?

Probably the new one that just opened in Yorkville on the same day the Film Festival started. Very posh.

Canadian74:

I'd say the most luxurious would be one of the signature suites at the SOHO or the Four Seasons. As far as celebrities go, their tastes vary just as much as people from any other industry. Architects/design oriented people are probably the best to gauge luxury. Celebs have alot of money, but aren't necessarily people to be taking cues from regarding style or anything else beyond how to be entertaining.
