Tender for 9 km long section Jánovce - Levoča won Váhostav (we always hated it because of how much overpriced motorways they build), this section will cost 60 million € which si 30% less than expected. Construction will start soon and supposed to be finished in 2014. Aslo second section of Jánovce - Jablonov goes to tender and winner will be known in the summer.

Another 2 sections go to tender too -

Fričovce - Svinia
Dubná Skala-Turany

D2

Since 1 June motorway D2 between the interchanges with D1 and D4 will be free of charge for vehicles under 3.5 t, thus you don't need a vignette to use this section. HOWEVER, section between interchange with D4 and Hungarian border (M15) as well as entire motorway D4 leading towards Austrian border (A6) remain charged.

New free of charge section at Google Maps: http://maps.google.sk/maps?f=d&sourc...,0.264187&z=13

I like the fact that you need a vignette on the 2 km long section of D4

You can use it on the entire network. IMO all motorways in Bratislava should be tolled.

Why also Sitina?

IMO, requiring vignettes for motorways but not local streets doesn't make any sense. If there are to be vignettes, then in my opinion they should be required for all driving. Creating an incentive for drivers to avoid motorways and use local roads instead is bad for everyone.

Problem is motorways in Bratislava are overcrowded with local traffic. It's especially case of Prístavný (Harbour) bridge. It would be better if traffic was more equally distributed between motorways and local roads.

There is nothing inherently wrong with local traffic using motorways.

Driver choice naturally results in equilibrium. Bottlenecks occur where driver choices are inadequate (in either number or quality).

Obviously, a new bridge will be needed for the D4. Are any other new bridges planned?

Just pedestrian ones. There isn't really any space for another bridge right in the city.

Would it be possible to extend Kutlikova street east and over the river?

The main problem of motorways in Bratislava is their small capacity. If the motorways were tolled, it would perhaps force some people to use alternative roads or to use public transport.

OK, but then all tunnels should get extra toll.

If there would be built another bridge after D4 bridge, then it will be definitely somewhere in the eastern part of Petržalka, possibly as an extension of Kutlíkova street. But that's very far future.

What Bratislava needs is D4, upgrade of Prístavný bridge (D1) to 2x4 and new connection in the northern part of the city:

Well, there are actually planned three northern rings: http://www.bratislava.sk/soubory/700000/1035459_V3.jpg

If the objective is to motivate people to switch from driving cars to public transport, then requiring a vignette for all roads would be more effective than requiring a vignette for only the motorways.

How many people actually have no vignette at all these days? In eastern Slovakia I could understand it, but I doubt if many commuters in the Bratislava region do not have a vignette already...

Actually, something like toll for entering the city isn't that bad idea. But it would require establishment of P+R option for commuters. There is plenty of solutions for Bratislava traffic problems, but officials fail to introduce them.

Annually there is about 680,000 year stickers sold so majority of cars in Slovakia isn't equipped with the vignettes. (In case of month vignettes it's 340,000 and in case of week vignettes it's 3 million.) It's important from where they commute to Bratislava because for plenty of suburbs motorway isn't really an option, but once they are in the city, they often use the free of charge sections of motorways. There is of course quite some commuting also within the city.
