Today it's exactly 37 years ago the first motorway of what would later become Slovakia opened to traffic.
On 12 December 1975, a 17 kilometer section of D61 (current D1) opened to traffic between Bratislava and Senec. It was the sixth motorway segment to open in Czechoslovakia.

Little correction.
Today it's 37 years since the opening of the first section of what is now D1. This year it's also 40 years since the construction of what is now D1 started (1972). Too bad even after 40 years of construction it's still not complete. ![]() However, the very first section of motorway in Slovakia was opened on 7 September 1973 - 39 years ago. It was D2 Bratislava - Malacky. BTW, motorway connection of both federal capitals - Prague and Bratislava, was opened in 1980. Crossing Malacky in 1980's: ![]() http://malackepohlady.sk/?p=1378 The same place in 2012 by Google Streetview:

Only thing which has changed is that the grass was greener back in a day.

BTW this year was extraordinarily dry, that's probably why the grass was greener at the old photo. Another factor may be the region is basically a desert covered in artificial forest.

Idk I think thats how it normally looks on the plain in late summer (I live in the moutains so its easy to spot the difference), I would say that first picture was shot in spring.
Anyway, except of new D2 sections in Bratislava, very little has changed since then. Junctions and bridges need some major improvement, there is also no fence alnog the motorway and what I miss on D2 is some proper motorway service. |

There is also planned upgrade of D2 to 2x3 lanes which includes something like general reconstruction of entire motorway from Bratislava to CZ border, although it's in early phase of preparation. But frankly, it wouldn't be needed anytime soon. These old sections of D2 don't have crash barriers on the bridges. I don't know why though. There is crash barrier before the bridge, then it turns into this kind of railing and after the bridge there's again a crash barrier: http://maps.google.sk/?ll=48.32684,1...88.18,,0,12.16 Quote:

It was also the first new motorway segment of D1 being put into service since June 2010. Unfortunately works slowed down significantly when the financial crisis reared its ugly head in 2008-2009.

Wast majority of D1 was supposed to be built in two PPP projects, but they were simply too big which had its consequences. There were few bids by private consortiums (for one of the PPP projects there was only 1 bid), lack of competition in combination with corruption resulted into high price. The prices were so high the winning consortiums failed to provide funds from the banks. Pretty much nothing was built during the negotiations with the banks and also after the projects had been cancelled it took some time to start the construction. These problems continue as it's still pretty difficult to close every competition for constructor due to numerous objections and obstructions made by the unsuccessful contractors. |

On D1 in Liptovsky Mikulas, the distance is still counted from Prague. I hope the Slovak Road Administration will change this immediately

Nice to see that they opened the second profile
Been driving last week there and was wondering what was left to do because it looks like finished and ready for opening On the Bratislava bypass most of the time such crashes happen there I lost my first car there because someone at the end of the traffic jam was too fast and did not stop and hit the standing line of cars
