Thanks. I thought D1 Bratislava-Kosice has priority. Presov bypass seems painfully neglected, considering that there is already a section operational between Presov and Kosice.

The part between Presov and Kosice was built under previous regime (Czechoslovak Socialist Republic) between years 1977 and 1988. So it has not much to do with "modern" Slovak Republic. And yea, all governments after 1993 was talking about D1 as the number one priority, but 20 years later and still not completed...

D1 is an expensive motorway to construct with all the tunnels and bridges. And the income from tolls is not really high, in 2012 it was € 206 million, including only € 50 million from vignettes.

Even if though would turn all funding from tolls in D1, and do absolutely nothing on the other 99.5% of the Slovakian road network, it would still take years for D1 to be completed.

Vignettes are not a feasible way to fund road projects.

That's another tunnel... Income from tolls for trucks (vignettes not included) were...

2010 -> 141 millions, but state received only 34 millions...

2011 -> 154 millions, but state received only 51 millions...

2012 -> 155 millions, but state received only 75 millions...

The rest 107 (2010), 103 (2011) and 80 (2012) went to private companies SkyToll and Fleetpay...

People help: a car towing a trailer with another car in SK. Altogether under 3500kg. Is it enough to have only regular vignette, the same for normal car?

I see some options for additional vignettes for trailers, but I cannot find explanation of classes at dialnicenalepky.sk

No, you have to have special vignette for trailers.

There is a trailer symbol on left-bottom. It costs the same as regular vehicle vignette = you know, bureaucracy

The set of vehicles you are talking about requires two vignettes (regular one and trailer one)

It may look like this:
+

Btw. the vignettes are compulsory for vehicles with the weight noted in registration certificate, no the immediate one
.

If the maximum possible weight does not exceed 3,5 t, you need only one regular vignette.

Some sections of D1 in Bratislava are going to be widened to 3 lanes per direction by converting hard shoulder into driving lane. This cheap solution should increase average speed on some sections of D1. However the major bottleneck - Prístavný Bridge will remain in present 2x2 alignment because structure of the bridge doesn't allow traffic to use the hard shoulder.

In my opinion, the best solution would be to build a parallel bridge with four lanes for one direction of traffic and then convert the existing bridge from 2x2 to 1x4.

Yes, sometimes traffic is so heavy.

The section is the most stupid in Europe.

It was "extended" in 2008-2009 from classic 2+2 alignment. Since there were no money to extend it more preciously, they have just removed the hard shoulder and make a traffic lane of it. Other lanes were narrowed.

The section thus does not meet the European and Slovak legislation, so the competent people marked is as "construction site" until the precious extension planned to period 2016-2018. Since it is "construction site", temporary traffic signs are used (yellow lines, yellow backgrounds, etc.)

The speed limit was set to 110 kph and later in 2010 to 110 kph within 5 AM - 7 PM.

Some people consider the right lane dangerous and therefore drive in middle lane (which I hate, because they negate the whole "extension"). The number of accidents was truly reduced, but the lines are hardly legible during worse weather conditions.

The traffic is really heavy especially in morning increased traffic demands (people driving from suburbs) and three lanes are required. The reduced speed limit is adequate too, but I think only in morning. It is really annoying to drive there during weekend.

New traffic legislation allows to mark motorway as expressway in case it does not meet the motorway requirements (half-profile, narrow lanes, etc.). It is used on short section of D4 Devinska Nova Ves - Zahorska Bystrica (D= motorway, but it is marked as an expressway). I don't know why the competent people don't mark this section as expressway and use permanent (read as "easily legible") traffic signs.

Btw. D1 motorway is the number one object of political competitions among Slovak parties in terms of transportation, regional development and whole economy of Slovakia. The topic is therefore very sensitive and sometimes it is counter productive.

your story just confirms my suspicions. and i must admit that it is quite unpleasant to drive. when i was traveling there there were just too many middle lane hoggers, and 110 km/h was non adequate speed limit due to lower traffic intensity

Yes, you have summed it up very effectively. Except the extension to Aupark.

1) the stage I. seems very unreal to my by now. But we will see.

2) the stage II. is just repainting of vertical traffic signs (lines). AFAIK it is not about adding the new through lane, but about joint of merging and turning lanes of two following exits. It is the matter of few nights I guess.

3) the stage III. requires some roadworks. I doubt if it is worth money.

"Upgrade" of D1 between Bratislava and Trnava significantly reduced number of accidents as well as number of injured and killed on this section. For me safety comes first and from this point of view the upgrade was a good thing. Sometimes the temporary alignment makes the drive unpleasant, 110 km/h speed limit is often tiresome and I agree the orange road signs are terrible, but the main goal was achieved.

On the other hand this temporary alignment simply lasts for too long and it should be rebuilt into proper 2x3 motorway ASAP.

I believe also mentioned upgrade of D1 in Bratislava will help, but it's of course only marginal improvement. As long as Prístavný Bridge remains in 2x2 configuration, there will be traffic jams every single day. Not even D4 (outer ring) will solve this. It is possible to build a new bridge next to the present one or to reinforce the bridge, but none of these solutions will take place any time soon.

oh, so they are planning to convert it into 3+3 only at some sections between Vajanory and Pristavny most. i thought they would do it at whole urban part of D1.
i still think that maybe better thing would be variable managment of SOS lane like German "seitenstreifen befahren" thing:

in that case lower speed limit is also ok due to high traffic when hard shoulders are turned into driving lane.

It's not possible to convert hard shoulder into driving lane in whole length of Bratislava's D1, because hard shoulder is not continuous. At interchanges hard shoulder is absent and there is acceleration/deceleration lane instead.

Well, it's not impossible, it would however require major construction works. What are they going to do now is just repainting horizontal signage.
