No, entire Bratislava ring will be called D4. "NO" is just abbreviation for "nultý okruh" which means zero circle.

R1 and D1

Today construction of three sections started. First one is rather short 3.3 km long stretch of D1 Studenec - Beharovce. Second one rather long 45.9 km long section of R1 Nitra - Tekovské Nemce. Third one is R1 northern bypass of Banská Bystrica (5.7km). The later two are being built as project of public-private partnership (PPP).

How are the PPP negotiations doing in Slovakia? We have quite a few problems with it.

We have quite a few problems too. One PPP project is already U/C, but remaining two (both on D1) are still uncertain. There is lack of funds due to the crisis.

Yes, every section is usually split on more subsections which are built by different companies.
First section is northern from km 4.9, second (the one with bridge above the town) is southern from this kilometre.

Here is map from www.highways.sk:

In Slovakia too. This one is short (9.6 km), but very difficult.

I also note that that twin main beam design for those viaduct bridges is considered to be obsolete here in the USA due to a lack of structural redundancy.

Just to be sure. The "twin main beam" design is this?

2 Mike: Design is completely performed by local Slovak design companies. I mean they are performing rather good quality, but it´s good to hear the new techniques are going to be common. Here they could be probably used in let´s say 5 years.

Yet some news from the highway construction throughout the country.

Some new photos from D1 Svinia-Prešov west section:

Video of tunnel Bôrik on D1 Mangusovce-Jánovce

Tomorrow will officially start the construction of another D1 section Jablonov-Studenec. It is adjacent section to the Studenec-Behárovce part, which construction started 2 weeks ago. After completition in 2010 you can drive more comfortable from Branisko tunnel western portal.

Yet another news and more important is for the 1st packet - ca. 75 km of D1 through PPP. But it´s maybe Qwert turn to bring this news
