Not a motorways news, but feel like belongs to this topic. Yesterday has been opened 11 km of the reconstructed section of national road I/18 between Žilina nad Martin. original 1+1 section has been widened to 2+1. This is just a temporary solution to relieve a bit traffic in the area as the construction start of tunnel Višňové on D1 motorway will happen hopefully this year.
More 2+1 sections are planned in other regions of the country.

Sorry for the small photos, I just couldn´t find any larger.

Location on google maps:

And some photos from June 21, mostly few days before opening:

Btw, Qwert, best wishes as SK and CZ moderator.

The best part was the construction company offered free mineral water to the drivers waiting in jams:

I hope it will help, but 30,000 vehicles a day require motorway ASAP.

Yes, never forget the kids.... The toys has been gifted as well.Link
Puzzle games, however, would be better for time spending, maybe next time.

This section has been opened several days before announced official date. It is rather exception, but I hope more such openings will follow.

Next time they should rather built tunnel Višňové so there won't be permanent jams at all.

R4 - bypass of Svidník

This 2x1 bypass will be the first built section of expressway R4. It's almost finished so it will be opened probably next month.

One of the best photos I have seen from this section. Although shots almost finished highway are better than e.g. from the beginning of earthing works.

Also, installation of NJ profile on R1 Zvolen-Banská Bystrica section is completed.

Great pics. What were the exact plans in Bratislava? Widen the D1 or build a new beltway?

It does look like the Southern bridge in Riga.

Damned, it´s a very good report, Ripley! Did you stay in Slovakia, or just passed for a holiday?

I always go transit through Slovakia and that was a work trip, I had to deliver a truck loaded with peat to Italy.

Sort of, except for the pylons and bridge layout from down, similar to this one. You, however, have other colorings of the pylons, maybe better.

And yes, so far is not planned widening of D1 in Bratislava, exactly as mapman wrote. Problem is the Prístavný most bottleneck and the section up to Senecká interchange. All section. mostly on estacades was built as 2+2 section with no reserve for the third /fourth/ profile. Especially section close to Prístavný bridge is in highly urbanised area so there will be not only price, but also approval big issue. Intensive planning, is, however preformed for the big Bratislava ring, D4 motorway, but the construction start before 2012 is highly unlikely. The plan for D4 was i think already posted here, so just a link.
Section of D4 Austria - D2 crossing is some time completed and the section between Záhorská Bystrica and Stupava is constructed. Other sections are under planning.

Are there any plans for a north-south motorway through Slovakia? Especially for the industrial region of Katowice and Budapest... I was thinking, a eastern route will be too expensive and naturally sensitive due to the high and low Tatra's, but how about a route from Zilina, Martin and Zvolen to Budapest? This route will follow valley and does not cross higher passes, making motorway construction better feasible. Sounds like a good idea for the 2015 - 2025 range to me.

This route:

It's about 130 kilometers shorter than via Bratislava and Györ.

Good that you transit always through SVK . Experienced any major jams around Považská Bystrica, or Žilina?

^ Yeah, going through Czech Republic and Austria is expensive, but through Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia to reach Italy is cheaper, the route is good, but pity road 86 in Hungary has bad quality. No, no jams there, I'm lucky. But on the way back I lost 2 hours in a jam from Bratislava until Trnava exit.

How many lanes will D4 have?

Chris, motorways planning has been done after careful consideration.
Just for remindment, this is the official map from the private server www.highways.sk:

Next time me and Qwert should use maybe some good drawing programme to describe it throughouhly, but for now just the comments.

There are cutrrently three north-south routes, D1+D3, R3 and R4. D1+D3, is, however the priority route, AADT is about three times higher, than on other R3+R4 sections. What you draw is almost a combination of D3 /PL border-Žilina/ and R3 /Žilina-Zvolen-H border/. On R3 is without question the highest intensity between Zvolen and Šášovské Podhradie /Žiar/ and maybe south from Martin, altogether maybe 50 km. Other sections of R3 have the intensity around 5-6000, even lower and they run through difficult terrain so the priority is really first some bypasses and later, but it is really IMHO far future the expressway, if ever. Btw, this route does not run thorugh the valey and cross several passes, requires tunnels, here is the link.
But the Trstená bypass near PL border /1+1/ is U/C at the moment.
North-south priority number one, is however, D1+D3 completition. It will be the first north-south completed motorway thorugh Slovakia.

AFAIK 2+2 lanes. Reserve for the third profile will probably stay at the sections with most anticipated AADT.
