Heh, elections will be (really) soon

So in 2010 NDS is going to put in use 21,1 km of D1. We can expext, 100 km of D1 will be under construction from February.

On way from Bratislava to Žilina will be complete motorway (D1) probably in May.

Probably the most famous motorway service in Slovakia - Dechtáre (D1) near Liptovský Mikuláš

"Salaš Dechtáre má poměrně zajímavou historii. Její název patří do pozůstalosti vesničky, která v současné době odpočívá na dně Liptovské Mary. Každopádně už od padesátých let na cestě z Ružomberoku do Martina v Dechtároch stála salaš, ve které jeden podnikavý bača hostil pocestné haluškami a ovčím sýrem. V sedmdesátých letech, kdy komunističtí zvěstovatelé světlých zítřků rozhodli spoutat další vodní tok a postavit mu do cesty horu šutrů, se rovněž rozhodlo o stavbě dálnice podél budoucího břehu přehradní nádrže. Nevím co je na tom pravdy, ale salaš, ve které se už tehdy vařili nejlepší bryndzové halušky na světě, byla přesunuta na kopec, kde se měla stát prvním a na dlouhou dobu jediným odpočívadlem na tom žertovném kousku dálnice."

- beautifle "skyline" of Tatras
- the best "halušky" in the world
- since 50`, it was located in village, this is new location, and village is "under" reservoir

-and, I have not been there

so post what do you thik about..

It's much different then Millau, this viaduct is extradosed structure whereas Millau is cable stayed. Besides there is big difference in the shape of supports.

Interesting map. There are lots of free bypass routes.

Not really, "bez poplatku" means "without toll". There aren't a lot of free alternates to motorways.

In fact, there is only one (mostly) non-toll first-class road that connects PL & HU, and that's far east from Slovenske Nove Mesto to Vyšný Komárnik. A reasonable alterantive for connecting Budapest and Krakow might be this one (but this road goes through a mountain pass near Vernar).

From now truckers wouldn't use motorways if they can.
For example the Austrian A2 is a toll road and lots of truckers use the Hungarian Main Road 86 to avoid it.
Longer, slower but much cheaper...

Since the Poles have long-term plans to construct an S19 towards the Slovakian border at Barwinek, do the Slovaks have similar plans for a construction from Prešov towards the Polish border?

msz2 and ChrisZwolle: the map posted by (HUN)RoGeR partially answers both of your questions. Specifically, whatever is in blue is a finished expressway (rychlostna cesta). However, as things go in Slovakia, many of these "finished" expressways are either actually not finished yet, or finished and not open, or/and have just two lanes.

Specifically, for E77 (which is mostly identical with the planned expressway R3), nothing has been uprgraded in a long time to the south of Zvolen. Then, there is a 4-lane expressway between Zvolen and Banska Bystrica. Some upgrade (like adding 3rd lane for slow cars) has been made on the Donovaly mountain pass between BB and Ruzomberok, and one two-lane section is done between Ruzomberok and Trstenna (shown in blue). That's all as far as I know.

Expresway R4 is planned in eastern Slovakia, connecting polish S19 from Brawinek to Hungarian M3 near Tornyosnemeti. The central section of this expressway between Kosice and Presov is finished (since it's the same road as the existing D1), the construction of the southern section KE-Milhost is supposed to start early this year (it will have 4 lanes, and it's almost sure that its construction will start - everything's ready, including EU funding). As far as the northern section from Presov to Vysny Komarnik goes, a two-lane bypass of Svidnik has been finished last May (or June), but then it got damaged by a flooding. So, even though the map says it's done, it's been never opened and it looks like it'll take a while to fix it (at least till the May election in Slovakia :-) ). The only other section that will be constructed on this road in foreseeable future is a bypass of Presov.

Sadly, both expressways R3 and R4 have an extremely low priority in Slovakia. So, no serious construction can be expected in next 10 years (with the exception of some bypasses).

What is the main reason Slovakia is so lacking behind other EU countries regarding modern road construction?

Shortly in English:

- length - 14,332 km
- between Ružomberok and Liptovský Mikuláš
-was under construction in years - 1973-1977
- there are motorway services - Ivachnová (to Košice), Dechtáre, Čemice
-241,3 mil. Kčs

As DrX said, there are some upgrades. However, this corridor will be in long term rerouted from present Banská Bystrica - Zvolen to future R3 via Martin - Zvolen. Now there is open just one bypass (Oravský Podzámok) and two are U/C: Trstená and Horná Štubňa. Part of this corridor will be also D1 between Švošov/Kraľovany and Martin which is U/C. Future common section of R1 and R3 between Žiar nad Hronom and Zvolen is already built. There is U/C also short feeder next to Martin which will be part of R3. Sections Trstená - Dolný Kubín, Dolný Kubín - Švošov/Kraľovany, Martin - Horná Štubňa and Zvolen - Šahy are being prepared (EIA approval is in progress).

When R4 Košice - Milhosť will be finished it will be possible to drive on 2x2 roads (expressway, motorway, national roads) all the way from Hungarian border to village Kapušany eastern of Prešov what is about 66 km. Map. (From Polish to Hungarian border it's about 130 km so it's one half of PL - HU route.) This year there will be put in use 2x1 bypass of Svidník close to Polish border, the rest is being prepared, in the most advanced stage is western bypass of Prešov (part of D1) followed by northern bypass of Prešov (R4). From the end of Prešov bypass to Polish border R4 will be built as 2x1 expressway, but noone knows when. Traffic there is quite low.

D4 is a large bypass of Bratislava, that is going to be build to ease congestion on the city's motorways. Interchange Stupava is where it meets D2 to Czech Republik.

Hi guys,

thank you for quick reply.

I know where already built D4 is (thanks ChrisZwolle), but I was wondering, is the interchange Stupava, which will be built in may only an interchange or does it go from somewhere to somewhere (3,2 km).

My next question is when will be new signs with new fonts on SK motorways?

What is the new font look like?

Thank you.
