BTW, guys, I've noticed they used our beloved pink colour also on new railway bridge which was build due to motorway construction.

Yes, it's called Tatranské elektrické železnice (Tatra's electric railways). It's something between tram and train for transport in Poprad - Tatry region.

• Slovakia has 76 railway tunnels with overall lenght 43.5 km, but for now only 5 road tunnels.
• We have a lot to catch up so in close future there will be boom of tunnel construction on motorways.
• Tunnels on expressways are matter of further future.
• Together there is planned, U/C or built 23 motorway tunnels.

Here is a map of motorway (not expressway) tunnels in Slovakia. It's old a bit, but still the most actuall available.
Black are built, red are U/C, green are planned or prepared and what are blue I'm not sure, probably it means exploration tube is done.
But, Sitina and Lučivná are alredy built and some green tunnels should be probably blue now.

Tunnel Branisko (4975 m) in half profile. Emergency tube will be rebuilt on regular tube, when motorway will be finished:





Tunnel Horelica (605 m) is on D3 in half profile, opened in 2003:






Tunnel Sitina (1440 m) was Slovakia's first full profile motorway tunnel. It's on motorway D2 and it's part of Bratislava inner bypass:

Tunnel Lučivná (250 m) is on D1. It was opened recently in in full profile. To be honest it's rather underpass:

Jesus Christ, almost 27 km of tunnels between Žilina and Prešov!

After long long planning, several trials, numerous protests and many many arguments two important and very needed sections are finaly under construction: Already mentioned D1 Sverepec - Považská Bystrica - Vrtižer and just 3 days ago R1 Žarnovica - Šášovské Podhradie. Although they are not already U/C completely, they soon will be.


R1 Žarnovica - Šášovské Podhradie

D1 Sverepec - Považská Bystrica - Vrtižer

This section is the 9.5 km missing gap on motorway between Bratislava and Žilina which was delayed several times. Now is U/C its Eastern part, consturction of the Western with 40 m high viaduct over Považská Bystrica and 30 m high viaduct over river Váh will start soon

D1 Sverepec - Vrtižer is physically U/C as you can see on the pictures.

Construction of R1 Žarnovica - Šášovské Podhradie started officially on February 26th and physically it will start on March 4th (this Tuesday). To be more exact it is subsection Žarnovica - Lehôtka pod Brehmi, construction of the rest of this section (Lehôtka pod Brehmi - Šášovské Podhradie) should start this year as well, but I don't know exact date.

Facts about 1st phase Jarovce - Ivanka pri Dunaji sever:

• construction should start in 2011
• it should be put in operation in 2016
• cost of the first phase is estimated on SKK 20 billion (EUR 610 million)
• lenght is 23 km
• bridge above Danube with estacades will have 1,896 m and will be 4 laned
• there are also two tunnels with 805 and 395 m

Whole motorway D4 will be 50.6 km long, there will be 9 km long tunnel under Malé Karpaty. It will end on Austrian border on bridge above river Morava:

Border Mosty u Jablunkova - Svrinovec (CZ-SK). It's a nice border, because there are actually two border stations left, and both in use. One in the direction of CZ:

I live in the USA, but I am not originally from the US and I have my share of driving in Europe What I meant by "European look" is how European roads look in general (design, signs, marking, etc.) I didn't mean to distinguish between the Eastern European and Western European roads.
