SGJ Slovakia Road Trip 2009 - Part 2

Hi everyone,

Here's my next instalment of photos. Many thanks for your feedback last time!

Saturday 25th April 2009 (continued)

On D1, heading north.

Short detour here on to road that I imagine is half-profile R6, but no signage confirms this.

Back along R6 (?) on to D1. This is my attempt to copy the picture that is on the front of my Slovakia road atlas!

The roadworks signs indicate that the end of the highway is approaching. There is a police speed check (60 km/h) just around this bend, at the lane drop.

On I-61. This bridge will be the brand new D1 route, which I believe will open later this month.

In Povazska Bystrica. This semi-urban single carriageway road carries two Euro reference routes, E50 and E75.

After Povazska Bystrica, heading back on to D1.

On D1, but not for long…..

….. Because D3 is approaching!

This photo is deceptive. When completed, the main line of D1 will continue through the concrete barriers in the centre of the picture. The lane markings direct all traffic on to the slip road that is the start of D3.

On D3. This is the first destination sign for Poland that I saw on this route.

D3 soon finishes, just outside Zilina.

On I-18. The Euro route numbers diverge here – E50, although not signed, follows route of I-18.

On I-11, heading north. The landscape is now noticeably more hilly than previously.

The dual carriageway stops before reaching Cadca.

This tunnel, opened in 2003, is part of the Cadca bypass and will form half the profile of D3 when finished. The number of this road now is not clear – it is marked as I-11A on one map, for example.

After Cadca, the “triple point”, where Slovakia, Poland and the Czech Republic meet, is very close.

Junction of I-11 and I-12. I note the weight limit on I-12 – is this relevant?

First, I drove along I-11 to the Czech border…..

….. And after 10 minutes, back into Slovakia.

On I-12. I’m driving on the left here (luckily there is no oncoming traffic!) because the road surface on my side is loose gravel. This was the first really low-quality road that I encountered in Slovakia.

Driving through Skalite. I wondered what the bridging was when I took this picture, but this thread has given me the answer: it’s the new D3 construction that currently finishes in the middle of a field!

Steep hill outside Skalite, to get to the border post and D3.

Still climbing…..

On to D3. The road is about 150 metres long, and then we hit the border. I don’t know what the bridge carries here – I’m not aware of any other major roads in this area.

Into Poland. After a short burst of new construction, the road quality drops dramatically. It’s now just after lunch…..

….. And after a drive through southern Poland and a short stop in Krakow, it’s well into the evening and I’m heading back into Slovakia along Polish route 7 through Chyzne. The border posts are visible in the distance.

Into Slovakia. This sign hasn’t yet been corrected for the new urban speed limit (reduced from 60 to 50 km/h recently).

This route, I believe, contains sections of road that will eventually form part of R3 when built. For now, it’s I-59.

Stunning scenery in this part of Slovakia.

On to a section of road that, due to the colour of the sign, may well be R3 in the near future. The Euro route number is wrong – E75 is further west, including the section from Zilina to Skalite.

Here’s the correct Euro number – E77.

Red sky at night, shepherd’s delight… A beautiful sunset at the end of a fine spring day.

It’s really getting dark now, as shown by the blurred photo. Approaching I-18 in Ruzomberok.

I-18 and I-59 briefly take the same route before I-59 turns south, over the Donovaly mountain pass.

On I-18, leaving Ruzomberok. The photos stop after this as it’s too dark…..

….. Apart from this one! After arriving in Poprad for an overnight stop, this photo shows my total length of time driving during the day – rather a lot!

Photos of eastern and southern Slovakia should hopefully follow in the next few days.

Thank you for great pictures and comments. And I agree with about 1024x768.

Is that Golf R or GTI?

Rarse,

Thank you very much for your comments. These are fewer than half of my total photos on that trip - I hope you also like the rest of them! (I'll make sure they're all no larger than 1024x768 when I post them )

I'm impressed with your car dashboard knowledge - it's my three year old R32. It's great for German autobahn high speed cruising, amongst other things

I hope to do a similar journey around Slovakia in 2011 or 2012, when I guess there will be quite a lot of new roads - should be fun!

Thanks ;D

So can a man in such sporty car drive 130 km/h on non-German autobahn ?

If you have some pictures of your Golf R32 (outside of SC), send me a PM. Thanks.
P.S.: Why are there miles on dashboard? Was this Golf bought in USA?

Yes I do like the rest of the pictures as well.

Can't wait for other Slovakian motorways photos.

It requires a bit of concentration and restraint..... It's also because of the police speed traps all over Slovakia - I counted at least 10 during my 4-day drive, on all kinds of roads.

Not quite - it's a UK version. We still use miles, mph and mpg on our cars and roads. Ireland changed to metric measurements a few years ago but we have no plans to do so.

Can I ask which road quality drops dramatically? After the Zwardoń border crossing you have the new stretch of S69 expressway with the Laliki Tunnel

Yes, it's R6.

It's I/11A. In the future it will be D3. Unlike expressways, motorways cannot be 2x1. There are roads which are 2x1 and they are already signed as expressways, but there are no 2x1 motorways. Actually, I think this is the only 2x1 road in Slovakia which will become motorway in the future.

It's some local road. You can see it in Google Maps: http://maps.google.sk/?ie=UTF8&ll=49...09645&t=h&z=17

There are two bypasses (bypass of Trstená and Oravský Podzámok) on this route which are sections of R3.

It won't be R3 in the future, it's already R3.

I can't wait to see more photos!

Last picture is awesome! That road near the future motorway is pretty dangerous. Drivers just doesn`t care about a road, they are looking on the castle.

Driving a car at 130 km/h it would be even dangerous.

Verso likes to correct grammar and spelling mistakes. He is something like SSC English supervisor.

Not to be totally offtopic here you can watch driving video from the almost completed motorway in Považská Bystrica.
