I've followed this thread for quite a while and I still don't know what to think of the viaduct in Považská Bystrica. On one hand, I think it fits in nicely with the landscape (it looks fantastic in aerial photos) and you'll get spectacular views of the surrounding countryside driving on it. But on the other hand, I'm not really a fan of all those pillars below (Like in the MÚK Centrum picture) and it think it just creates wasted space. I might have a different opinion once construction wraps up and they landscape the areas below. Great progress nonetheless!

As far as I know, MÚK centrum is located on a floodplain, so that nothing else can be built in that area. Maybe some parks, but not houses or buildings. I don´t really like massive flyovers with huge pillar either, but here they probably had no choice.

There was a choice. Not to build the interchange at all. There is already more than enough interchanges. Považská Bystrica has 42 thousand inhabitants and it has 3 interchanges.

Does that number include Sverepec and Vrtižer?

The interchange itself must have been extremely expensive, so it seems that they could have saved something like 1-2 billion SKK if they left it out. In the Czech Republic, they are trying to save money in that way. I'm not sure if something like that is possible on the U/C sections of R1 or D1 in Slovakia, but anyway the PPP projects are so expensive that it doesn't matter anymore.

True but you still see politicians talking about SKK, recently transport minister replied that way while talking about reconstruction of Prístavný most (Harbour bridge) in Bratislava... We have an idiom for that "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" especially if talking about €€ money €€...

Yes, Sverepec, Centrum and Vrtižer.

OK, so they could have saved something like 33,193,918.86 - 66,387,837.75 €.

..and this could be the best choice. Btw, Tornala has 8000 inhabitants and 3 junctions with R2 But those junctions were far less expensive, than PB centrum.

In case of Tornaľa bypass those interchanges were necessary and of course much cheaper.

Anyway, there was an another choice. There were many ways how to build a motorway there. There were plans for outer motorway bypass of city. Of course, many of them were less expensive and more friendly to enviroment and citizens of Považská Bystrica, but in Slovakia there are not companies connected with goverment that should build up a tunells. This is nice example how "we are" doing our politicians richer here in Slovakia.

3 interchanges are completely useless there..

btw, I was today in Budapest, journey tooks me a 2:30 from Martin to BP (210 km). It will be pretty fast when there will be a motorway.

Do you know if this bridge will have some name? I think this is the most beautifle bridge on our motorway network.

under the bridge

It supposed to be open before elections, 7.6.

Fico`s goverment is going to show us next days how "great" they are.

30.5. - D1 - Považská Bystrica
6.7. - Airport Bratislava - first stage of a new terminal
6.7. - D1 - Svinia - Prešov
x.x.- R4 - Bypass of Svidník

Motorway openings just before elections are sooo tacky.... Planning and financing motorways is usually started one, two or even three governments earlier. The current government just happens to be in charge while the thing is completed.
