SMER-SD is talking about 150 km of motorways built up by their goverment. In fact, they built up just about 20-30 km of motorways. Every another kilometer of motorway had started goverment before, not current.

People will vote this goverment again. Doesn`t matter if these motorways were overpriced. Motorway network is still too short and main roads are still mising at all.

so it is tacky, but effective

EDIT:

One photo of motorway D1 in Bratislava - Petržalka. It is close to interchange with D2 and near to Austria (about 1,5 km)

SGJ Slovakia Road Trip 2009 - Part 4

Excellent forum dudes,

Here’s the next section of my route – either 1 or 2 more instalments to come!

Sunday 26th April 2009 (continued)

On I-50 just outside Kosice, heading westbound. The tower with the sphere on top of it, just visible, is I believe a way of storing water at high pressure in this relatively flat region.

Like most of Slovakia, an absolutely beautiful setting. This area is very close to the Hungarian border, to the extent that places in this area have 2 road signs – Slovak and Hungarian spellings.

Mystery fort or castle near the main road!

The terrain gets slightly more hilly further west. Stunning backdrop here.

Approaching mountainous terrain near Lipovnik.

Back on flat land. This road is E58 as well as the indicated numbers.

More amazing scenery on I-50.

A bit closer to these hills…

Junction for expressway around Tornala.

On expressway (R2 when I drove along it, although I think it’s a different number now).

The Figa bypass had only been open a few months, I think, in April last year.

Considering I drove on a Sunday afternoon, I was expecting more traffic. However, many parts of I-50 were like this – no traffic on my side of the road.

Another expressway section, bypassing Ozdany.

I-50 is heading straight at Lucenec here, so it curves to the right to avoid the town. I-75 accesses Lucenec.

The signs now point to destinations beyond the major junction at Zvolen.

The scenery is still great…

… And still there is very little traffic. However, I did see at least 5 police speed traps between Kosice and Zvolen, so it was just as well that I stayed at the speed limits!

A short tree lined section.

The area gets slightly more built up approaching Zvolen.

On expressway section (R22 ??) near Zvolen, about to turn to Banska Bystrica.

Approaching Banska Bystrica. This was the overnight stop.

I have to say that the photos earlier in the thread of the Vratna region were fantastic – I’ll definitely look in that area during my next Slovakia drive!

The new numbering is only a proposal. Old numbers are still valid.

I didn't know that Jánovce - Jablonov was so far behind Jablonov - Behárovce. Are there any significant bridges or tunnels on the bypass of Levoča (Jánovce - Jablonov)? I/18 has a complicated route there. And when will the two sections be completed?

The bridge is very nice indeed. It respects the nature and the shape of the surrounding hills.

It depends on PPP. We will see.

You`ll understand, but for others.

- total length is 18,54 km
- 616 m long tunnel "Šibenik"
- 16 bridges - 3586 m long
- two junctions - "Spišský Štvrtok" D1 with I/18 and "Levoča" D1 with I/18
- one motrway service "Levoča

Interesting, you don't see that very often in Europe I believe, an exit that solely leads to a service area. I've seen it in Sweden though.

Thanks for the information. I see that it is another extreme highway section, there some very long bridges. In a PPP scheme, who actually decides which companies are going to build the highway? The government, or the private investors?

I hope that the PPP's will be successful. I think that the future of Slovak highways largely depends on that.

It seems to be something between "Raststätte" and "Autohof"

I think the main reason for that is to get the rest area as close to Levoča city as possible to show people on the rest area a sort of spectacular view of this UNESCO city of Levoča from this hill. Many european rest areas have this purpose, in Germany it's typical near big bridges (Kochertalbrücke, Moseltalbrücke and others) or towns (Würzburg comes to my mind).

You can see it in Austria too, e. g. Raststation Dreiländerecke on A2

It`s funny but even better than your junction/village "Kokotów" on A4 near Kraków.
