Corridor E77 will be served by expressway R3. Some two weeks ago officially started construction of 7 km long bypass of Trstená. There is already built bypass of Oravský Podzámok and that's for long time probably everything for this expressway. Look at map of Slovak motorways and expressways in 2015 on previous page, there are only those two sections. Except part between Polish border and Dolný Kubín it's still not even definitely decided where this expressway should be built.

Sure, but it could take even 20 years until traffic density will require regular motorway. That's case of almost all North-South connections in border regions of Slovakia. Traffic is big enough for 4 lanes (well, somwhere even 6 lanes won't be enough) mainly in East-West connections.

These anomalisms aren't that uncommon, we also have them. They are usually defined as they are to simplify things. Don't put too much attention to signage, the situation at hand is important. I'm sure this road won't be marked as motorway, only in signage.

Urban D1, part II

After little bit longer time here is the continuation of urban D1. Photos are from Harbour bridge to the end of Bratislava.

On the Harbour bridge (Prístavný most), direction Petržalka:

Here is it, IMO the ugliest, but also the most important bridge in Bratislava:

And this is the end.

Encore: I hope it's shiny enough:

Of course there isn't. That would be too easy to add new lane to motorway where is reserve for it. We rather build 2x2 motorway for billions and then demolish it and build 2x3. Then we will demolish it again and built 2x4 and so on. Since it will be more expansive there will be also more money to steal. This is approxiamtely the way how our politicians think.

I think Bratislava now needs mainly outer ring (D4). (BTW, I'm sure it will be built 2x2 with no reserve to make more fun.) Then upgrade of Harbour bridge on 2x4 or 2x5 lanes (what means we must demolish it and built brand new bridge instead) and only then upgrade of the other sections of Bratislava urban motorways. I think the best wouldn't be 2x3 or 2x4, but rather 2+2+2+2 as it's on Petržalka section of D1 and section of D2 between bridge Lafranconi and tunnel Sitina.

Why? You think this is 1 bridge?:

Or maybe not...:

Its actually 3 bridges, built at different times...there's no need to demolish a bridge to extend it...

In case of Harbour bridge it would be IMO only hardly possible. This two story bridge was proposed to handle about 50.000 cars a day (in 1977 when the construction started nobody expected there could be so much cars and many people were saying it's unreasonable to built it). However, traffic density there is already more then 100,000 cars a day, it's rather close to 150,000. This bridge simply cannot handle so much traffic forever. Not only due to its capacity (it's 2x2), but mainly due to its structure. The traffic is slowly destroying this bridge. There was idea long time ago to use emergency lanes as driving lanes, but it wasn't accepted because it would cause serious structural problems. The bridge is not built to carry traffic in emergency lanes and thus it would be very difficult to add even more lanes. Maybe it would be theoretically possible to rebuild it, but brand new bridge would be cheaper and better. However, it don't have to be demolished whole, adjacent estacades and pillars could be used for the new bridge as well. On the other hand, it also cannot be closed. At least until Bratislava outer ring won't be finished, because even small accident on that bridge is causing immediate collapse of the traffic in whole city.

Well, during war it's simple. You need just Krasnaya Armia chasing Wehrmmacht and you can be sure not a single bridge or tunnel will be untouched. During peace time the bridges are probably being dismatled.

It's urban expressway esp. for the heavy city traffic, motorway and expressway bypasses are naturally planned outside the city

Exactly. This is how it should look like in Košice. Photos are from that yellow urban expressway. Most parts of it are already finished. Real bypass will be that green line.
