It is a VERY ENJOYABLE thing to do when roadtripping if time is not a major factor.

Now, back to the borders...

Mike

Hi Mike,

Do you have any pics/info about the border around International Falls, Minnesota/Fort Frances, Ontario? Looks like an interesting area. Certainly a cold area in the winter...

Does anybody knows how long you have to wait at the Slovenian or Hungarian border with Croatia outside peak holiday travel days?

Back in the summer of 2005 when we entered Croatia from Slovenia at Rupa we passed in 5 min . Just stamped our passports and that was it. They did keep us some 30 min at the border with Hungary, though!

I've never been there, but a nice aerial image is at:
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=4...&t=k&z=16&om=0
(that's a large paper mill on the left)

The photo in that other post is the USA checkpoint at International Falls, MN.

Interestingly, CN's western Canada <-> Chicago mainline officially crosses just to the east at Ranier, MN. Continuing westward from Fort Frances, ON, the CN crosses back into the USA at Rainy River, ON/Baudette, MN to go around the south of Lake of the Woods, crossing back into Canada At Longworth (it's between Warroad, MN and Middlebro, MB)

See:
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=4...&t=k&z=16&om=0
(note the USA-bound CN train crossing the border there )

When i entered Croatia from Slovenia in July 2006, within 5 minutes we had crossed the border, just showing our passports was enough. The same from Hungary to Croatia. They even gave us a packet full of tourist information and roadmaps!

Well, I guess the border officers know that we tourists bring a lot of money to their countries and thus increase their living standards !

Yeah, but back then, the Slovenian - Croatian border wasn't a schengen border

And what about the Croatian - Bosnian border? (Plitvice - Bihac for instance), it seems fun to me just to be in that country for a couple of kilometers.

^ Shouldn't be long either (b/c of the long border). I was also thinking about it, hehe, the only time I was in Bosnia, was more than 20 years ago, in Yugoslavia. All I remember is falling down some stairs in Jajce.

These stories might be true, because you sometimes have to wait 5 hours to cross the border between Estonia and Russia with a car. With a truck it might take days.
