Trucks are not allowed to drive in Germany on Sundays and holidays. Several other European countries also have similar legislation. As all truck parking within an hour driving of the border (which is halfway through the Netherlands) are full, they have no option but to line up at the shoulder.

Slightly off topic, but trucks are banned on Sundays in France as well, aren't they? Is it more widespread than that?

I covered some ground yesterday (Philadelphia to Carlisle, Pa., to Gettysburg, then home through northern Maryland) and there times when I would have been glad to see a Sunday truck ban....

It is easier to find out which countries in Europe don't have the Sundays and holidays ban for trucks

The Sunday bans are not a major problem. Local holiday bans are. For example, the German unification day, not to mention holidays which are only in protestant or catholic states.

As the Netherlands is arguably the most important distribution center in Europe (port of Rotterdam, greenhouses, flowers, agricultural products, fish, etc.) there is a lot of truck traffic that has an origin or destination in NL that travels to Germany, Poland, Russia, Turkey, etcetera.

i'd rather say the Netherlands is an exception because majority of European countries ban trucks on the motorways and major routes. hi HR they are banned too, but not the whole day (i think up to 9 or 10 pm)

So am the only one here thinking that the truck drivers ought to time their departures from centres in Holland in a more intelligent manner, so that they ensure reach the German border precisely on those days when it's clear they'll be able to drive?

No. Dutch legislation forbids truck parking almost anywhere except for motorway rest areas. Urban areas are usually off-limits, and parking along non-motorways is extremely limited.

Since the flooding rather affects me, though thousand km away. There goes another picture from www.novinky.cz.

It is the former border bridge I58 between Czech Rep. and Poland in Bohumin. It was not used for truck traffic since floods in 1997 if I am not mistaken. Now it looks like this. The opposite shore is Poland - Chalupki

This is from Poland towards Bohumin, the same bridge.

Simply winiety

You can see that the section just before the border on the German side was repaved, still markings on the bridge are far from perfect...

The full name I know of is "Karty opłat drogowych". I guess it's the same as Winiety.

The northernmost border crossing in the world is located near Nuorgam, Finland. It is also the nothernmost settlement in the European Union.

Probably because there is a point of automatic traffic count.
