I've also been checked at the Öresund Bridge toll plaza.

Another time was on A81 in southern Germany where they meticulously strip-searched my entire car.

In 2009 I was checked by French customs at Poitiers, 440 kms from the closest border (Spain at Irun), driving a Peugeot with Swedish plates. They can show up truly anywhere.

They almost stripped me at Melbourne airport, cause they thought I had bombs.

Are you sure that you were checked by French customs? It's quite hard to believe that they were so far away from a border.

Yes, it's totally possible, and actually quite usual in France. It is named "douane volante" (customs mobile units), and they are allowed to control vehicles, goods, people's identity etc, everywhere inside the French territory + Monaco.

As normal, from the blog "Histórias da Raia"

The border-defining treaty between Portugal and Castille and Leon was signed in the latter in 1297

Looking towards Portugal

And towards Spain

I love these little border crossings. Reminiscent of how porous things used to be in the past

Yes indeed, it was quite late in the evening but if I remember correctly they wore yellow vests with the text DOUANE on it. I guess like parcdesprinces wrote it was the douane volante (flying customs, if translated directly).

And what were they checking? I bet that 99.99% of cars stopped by them there didn't leave the country in the following days, nor they were comming from another country.

It's mainly about drugs, black market cigarettes, illegal quantities of alcohol/liquors coming from Andorra, or counterfeit products......or even about illegal immigrants sometimes.

I got checked in Hungary on open road and once in Slovenia when i was going to spa - they searched each cm of my car at the bus station. And it was raining.
Also Croatian customs few times checked each cm of my car while exiting to Slovenia. They were obviously very bored. They even demanded from me to open box wit candies and to show them.

4 weeks ago when we were travelling from Germany to Austria (I might actually post some pictures) police stoped us and asked silly questions eg. "Do you have any guns?" etc., it took probably about 2 mins but it was quite anoying. :P

Yep, basically.

But probably they just stoped us because we were travelling about 180 km/h by black jeep with Slovak licence plates and all what Germans know about Slovakia is about crime and our government.

But then when they saw how lovely people we are he just asked us these weird questions, checked front seats a bit and that's it.

Slovaks with guns? No, they still use this one:

----------

No more than two weeks ago I had been stopped by French douane volante. I was travelling on GB plates, so they weren't too polite until I showed them Polish ID card. They started laughing and let me go. ????
