The Croatia/BiH border is very very interesting - I've found several places where the border is wide open without any attempt at stopping traffic and no controls. I understand when you've got a situation where you can just walk over - but there seems to be several roads that are completely unguarded and open for cars to just drive in/out at will.

I can't see how it's going to be possible for Croatia to join Schengen without BiH being a member of the EU - the frontier is just too long and indefensible.

Does anyone know if exit checks will be abandoned on the Slovenia/Croatia border after Croatia joins the EU?

Exit checks? Possibly, yes.

It has to sign the Schengen treaty first.

Entry checks will still be there, but exit checks not necessarily.

I have never seen one. What I did see was very strange: coming out of Monaco, on the entry slip of the motorway towards Italy an Italian No Autostop sign, even though the area is fully in France.

I have only seen the standard French city-limit signs. You then have to know by yourself that it's a French village (or your sat-nav is telling you ...)

Yes, that surprised me as well when getting on the motorway in Menton (full Italian sign with regulations, "toll road" hint, etc.). But it might be legit since from there, the next possibility to exit the motorway was in Italy only.
The Italian continuation of the motorway is Autostrada dei Fiori, one of the most expensive ones in the country (but very scenic).

It's not at the last exit and italian version is there ... and I am really amused by the italian version of Vintimille on the overhead sign !! (xxmiglia) (yes I know that Venti = XX but still)

Will any Italian understand XXmiglia at the first look?

Why wouldn't they? It's pretty obvious, especially with the French next to it

It's a shame the French sign doesn't say VentiM to match with the Italian XXmiglia.

An Italian maybe but a foreigner certainly not.
BTW, I saw Azzano X (Azzano Decimo) on a road sign.

part of ruta nacional 12. The bridge opened on November 29, 1985. It's called the Puente Internacional Tancredo Neves

Teruel is a small city in the middle-east of Spain, located in the south of Aragon.
It is the smallest province capital city in Spain. And it has a volley team that has won the league for the last four years.
It is the only sport they have in the city. Football team is in the third league and no other major sports... but they have a volley team that "wins all".

As league winner, they play the Volley European Confederation Cup (in other words... the champions league). For second time they to go to Maaseik in Belgium (it is not the first time this small city team goes there).

Travelling for those teams where there is no airport, motorways to just somewhere (not a full network), rubbish railway shuttle, etc... is not easy. Specially when they have to go to some Eastern European cities.

In this case... several border crossing. Faster way is a flight to Charleroi and later, to destination via Maastrich, crossing Dutch border twice.

I think two years ago they went via Weeze and crossed Germany, Netherlands and Belgium just for a couple of km...
