USA/Canada border crossing (Derby Line, Vermont).

What kind of mess is that?

If you are not allowed to cross the border via the street, why isn't there a fence or something?

And what if your house is just next to the border line?

My favourite one is Mursko Središće with border crossing on major street near main plaza CLICK

And library is binational... but you can be living in that area but cannot cross the border either if there is no fence

That whole area was specifically made this way to ensure a kind of friendship between the countries, consider as one and for hundred years there was no issue. Only recently all this crap has started... as you can see the border goes through that building as well and there is a line on the floor marking it too (OK probably painted by the management for "fun")

Even a while ago a man from Canadian side went to gas station on one side of town (gasoline about 25-30% cheaper in USA than Canada) and then arrested and sent to prison in America, because he had a hunting rifle in the truck (as do many people in these rural areas) and did not declare at border checkpoint (as there isn't one on the road). Even Colin Powell admitted this was lunacy

Why doesn't the government do something about this issue?

We've discussed the Derby Line area many times on this thread.

Anyone for a rehash of Baarle? :-)

I should really go to Baarle once. Even though it's fairly close (about a two hour drive), I've never been there.

Um, there are two governments involved (not including state, provincial, etc.) and it's not clear what "this issue" is (there are rules about stopping at the border post and they're clearly posted; so is the issue the guy failing to stop? The fact that the border's marked with flowerpots rather than a fence? The (arguable) overreaction of the border patrol?)

The problem is having this kind of mandatory border checkpoint thing. Costs billions of dollars to do nothing. It is clear Schengen-style system is the future
