Are you referring to building a fence or illegal crossing?

The caption in the first picture is wrong. The right is Mexicali, the left is Calexico.

Another Wales-England one, this one was taken on a bridge somewhere along the Monmouthshire/Gloucestershire border...

And here's some not very good ones, taken with a better camera, from the France / Spain border near Valcarlos, taken this summer. That's my contribution!

Nice pics guys! Is there actually any border control between Northern Ireland and Ireland? I mean, both the UK and Ireland are no Schengen countries

They are in their own "union". That's why Ireland doesn't join Schengen.

What is border control actually like in Europe? I mean, is it easy enough to drive between countries, or does it take a while to cross national borders? I don't think I've ever crossed a national border by road, only by air and (twice) by rail.

Large portions of the European Union (hence Europe) have signed the schengen treaty, which means there are no border controls at all between most countries. You can drive from Estonia to Portugal without having to show your passport once.

Borders with other countries, especially outer borders of EU can have pretty strict controls, especially with Russia.

Thanks, I didn't know any of that. I think it's a very good idea to do that, particularly in Europe where there are lots of countries in a fairly small area.

The main tourism area in western Europe have all joined Schengen, except for the UK and Switzerland (they join in next december AFAIK)

The borders are marked with signs (as shown in several pictures in this thread), but it can sometimes happen that there is no sign (nor no clear sign) at all so you don't actually notice that you cross a border.
Of course there are some minor changed (i.e. the roadpavement, signage, etc.), but especially when you cross a border between countries where the same language is spoken it could sometimes be difficult (especially for foreigners) to determine in whcih country you are (like Netherlands-Belgium (major part), Germany-Austria, Belgium (Wallonia)-France, etc.

Yeah, together with Ukraine and Belarus.

@Robosteve

no controls at all:

BTW - Ukraine back to USSR times - must be an US map
