Penn's Woods, what I don't understand (even if I'm not on the receiving end of your antics) is why do you get so angry and feel you need to act as if people with whom you disagree were insulting you. Of course you, me and everybody else have the right to disagree and have different opinions, but you always take benign issues as if we were personally attacking you, or the country you live in -thus demanding an "appropriate blow back".

Chill out, please. Not everyone who is writing something about the English language, the US or some other issues you care about deeply is doing so to piss you off, to troll or to attack them.

Ukraine is used with article also in German (like Kosovo or Kongo also for example). That has nothing to do with the official name (of course official name for Ukraine is "Ukraine" in German, not "Die Ukraine"), just with the language itself. In French for example, you use the article with every country in some grammatical situations.

Example:
Berlin is in Germany
Berlin ist in Deutschland

Kiev is in (the) Ukraine
Kiev ist in der Ukraine

Don't know about English, but I guess a native speaker should know it. It's something about feeling for language, non-native speakers don't have this.

Edit: I had a look, Wiktionary states this (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Ukraine):
Quote:
Since the country's independence in 1991, style guides recommend Ukraine, without an article. Previously, the most common usage was the Ukraine.
So, "the Ukraine" is correct English!

One of differences between English and "Globish":

English: "The police are stupid."

"Globish": "The police is stupid."

Anyone surprised?

The preposition changed in the russian language when using the word Ukraine.

In Soviet times they said: На Украйне. (In the Ukraine)

After the independance they say: В Украйне

We always say 'na Ukrajine' and 'na Slovensku' (literally at Ukraine, at Slovakia) which are afaik two non-island countries exceptions. Otherwise we say 'v Madarsku, v Polsku, v Rusku' (literally 'in Hungary...').

In case anyone's interested, in Italian "Ucraina" never had the article, but after the fall of communism it changed the pronounciation stress: before it was Ucràina, now it's Ucraìna.

The police ARE
The media IS
The staff ARE/IS depending on whether it is US or British English.

I am wondering if Australian English is closer to British or American English in terms of grammar, syntax and spelling....

we don't have articles in Croatian (thx god ) but we have weird situation with Thailand. for all countries we use preposition "in", but only for Thailand we use "at".

also, we use "at" for island countries, but not for all: at Iceland, at Madagascar, at New Zealand, at Cuba, at Cyprus, but in Australia, in Japan, in Bahrein, in Ireland...

I think you didn't undestood this well... This is a border between Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Republic of Srpska is just an entity (subunit) of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

that is only a welcoming unofficial panel to show in which of both entities you arrive: it's never located at the border itself (the pic of the border control is the one at the bridge with the national panel) : it's always located further inland (here close to the entrance of the truck parking)
