There is a small bar next to this border crossing, on the italian side. The lady behind the counter speaks fluently slovenian, venetian (in the Trieste version) and italian, joking and doing smalltalk with the customers especially in venetian and slovenian. Pretty cool to hear her switch confidently from one language to the other.

What would a day on SSC be without a nice dose of two-bit Continental moralizing?

We had once a binational banner (Italy and Slovenia), hadn't we?
I do not remember about its mark but I scored it 5

No, it's completely different. East Germans built the wall to keep their own citizen within the hell\prison that was the DDR, while Americans built the wall to prevent illegal immigration from Mexico.
I wish that the EU would take the immigration issue as seriously as the USA do (allowing only people with job and house, other than political and war refugees).

Why moralizing? It's a wall. Israel and Berlin had them too. It's a fact.

haha, first of all immigration has been shown to be positive to host environments. i refer to such studies as arrival city etc.
second of all you don't seem familiar with the de facto porousness of the mexican -us border and the way it is much more permeable than the eu space.

the us even has a lottery as you know for immigration so in fact it is more immigration friendly than the EU obviously.

what u are saying is you want a police state and some kind of physical isolation of it. the social consequences of that would be disastrous and europe is already way beyond the point of even considering it.

The only reason for the U.S. (and Australian / Canadian) prosperity is immigration through the centuries. Without it, it would've been barren land.

Exactly what I meant. I didn't write anything about good or bad. Therefore I don't understand why it should be moralizing.

Only the immigration of educated people, who work and are willing to integrate. This kind of immigrants are welcome there. In a world where the economy is shrinking, the unemployment is growing, I don't see how an uncontrolled mass immigration of people without money, job, house,... can improve economy.
It's not a matter of racism, it's a matter of numbers. If Italian population will grow from 60 to 100 million in few years, its resources won't increase proportionally and there will be less wealth, especially if those 40 extra million people don't bring wealth but take it away from others.

no, definitely not. i will not get into the immigration debate more in order to not get off topic. it might be an issue of ideology, worldview, local situations but the facts do not suport your point of view.

Exactly, we sucked all the best and brightest people out of Europe , that's why economic growth is better here and why EU countries have such more social programs (lazy people stayed )
