They were repaving the whole section, as can be seen on the pics. The problem is that they sometimes don't detour when a road is getting repaved, causing you to drive over gravel on a busy road

Guess what - I posted this pic(with covered signs) on our forum and apart from people very much in the topic of roads, many said it was either Poland or somewhere in the East

There you are. Luckily the are repaving some roads. I also think that their railway stations use(d) to be quite bad. I remember sitting in the Thalys, just after the Dutch-Belgian border, and we were passing some really bad stations - looked like Italy or Slovakia. Abcoude used to have a very shitty station, but we got a brand new one a few years ago

Yeah, I also took the Thalys once from Paris to Rotterdam. You see things along that railway line which are unthinkable in the Netherlands.

But let's get back to border crossings. How often do you guys cross a border? I crossed the German borders about 6 times in the last two weeks. But I live relatively close to the border (closest is about 40 km near Hardenberg).

Not that often, every two months or so, but I can see Austria from here anyway.

Hasn't there been no control on the Dutch-Belgian border for a very long time?

Since 1993 there is Schengen, but years before that control stopped inside the Benelux, AFAIK.
I live a little further away from the border - a little over an hour away. I went to Vienna by train in february, so that's 4 crossings, and I had a party in Germany in June. That's it for this year (when I don't count the trip to the US). So only twice by car this year. I know, it's pretty bad. In 2007 I crossed borders a little more. 7 borders crossed on holiday to Slovakia, and I crossed the border with Germany and Belgium various times on a bike trip in the south of the Netherlands. And I went to Prague with school in october, so that's another few times. I assume that most guys over here cross more borders than I do.

For me it would be 2x(PL-D, D-A, A-I) times in the summer and in winter, 2x(PL-CZ, CZ-SK, SK-A, A-I) and 14x(PL-CZ), as for one week I stay in Poland and go skiing to CR.

So, at the end of the day, it would be 28 times a year. Taking into account that I have ca. 400 km to the nearest border, it's not that bad

My most is probably 30 or sth. I once visited the tripoint NL/BE/DE and ran around the border post 10 times or sth (I was 9 at that time)
And the most I've crossed the border in one day in a normal way is probably 3 or 4. Not that much.

There must have been a long time ago, but I cannot remember ever have been controlled at the Belgian border. Schengen exists since 1993, but the Benelux (Belgium-Netherlands-Luxemburg) union is older. I know that sometimes there are some checks (especially at the end of the year when some fireworks in Belgium is sold which is legal there but illegal here).
But I have never been checked.

The treaty establishing the Benelux Economic Union (Benelux Economische Unie/Union Économique Benelux) was signed February 3, 1958 and came into force in 1960 to promote the free movement of workers, capital, services, and goods in the region.
So since 1960, there was already free movement within Benelux. This precedes Schengen by 33 years.

48 years; I knew it was long. So that border crossing was big only until 1960, or Palance meant until there was no motorway beside?

Verso for Austrian President! Not exactly from my house, but I don't need to go around much to see it. It's certainly visible from castle:
