The diagram is oversimplification, because it ignores the EU VAT area and the Nordic Passport Union for instance. The EU VAT area would be hard to draw, because the excluded area are small spots within several countries.

Yesterday I went hiking near the French border. Later I discovered that part of the trail was in Italy, part in France, but very rarely I found indications. For example:

This bridge marks the border, I'm in France looking towards Italy. But the creek itself doesn't mark the border, in fact:

this picture is taken in the same spot, looking right with respect to the previous one, so that left is Italy and right should be France. But looking at the maps, the house on the right is in Italy.

Some border stones found along the trail:

In this section, the trail itself is in France and the border runs along it for a while.

Another border stone, at the top of Cime de Saurel (2451 m):

left is France, right is Italy.
Same border stone, looking the other way towards France:

I add the map, because I reckon "near the French border" is a bit generic...

Should we see here some pictures? I don't see any.
Edit: I can already see them. It must have been some temporary issue.

It's because of Picasa/Google+. If you quote the post and enter the links of the images in your browser one by one, you will see them, also on SSC page.

Still problems? I figured Google solved this issue... I think it didn't happen anymore since long ago.

No it is not prohibited and not true about the state of the signs, some are good, some not. Nothing changed.

The border was only demarcated as late as 1991?

I'm not sure... from what I know, the border there was demarcated in 1975 (before that date half of the town of Claviere was in France, now it's entirely in Italy). Maybe 1991 just indicates the year the stones where physically put in place.

Could I ask for a huge favour from anyone living in Croatia or Slovenia?

I want to go back to Restoran Kalin to finally eat dinner inside there, but I remember that it was closed last summer around this time. Would someone be kind enough to call them to check if they're open or closed?

http://www.restorankalin.com/location/ - the numbers are here.

I promise to take pictures inside if it's open

You'd be best asking these questions at a Croatian Skybar or something. Not here.

There is a point, as it's the only place on the entire HR/SLO border where you can cross the border legally without a local border pass and without immediately reporting to the border control.

Or just a mistake with languages. ETA is Finnish for EEA (Euroopan Talousalue, European Economic Area).
